I brew a chocolate stout, using a few vanilla beans (split & scraped) soaked in vodka. Been thinking of changing things up, maybe using bourbon or rum.

What are your favorite liquors for making vanilla tinctures?

Do you use different processes depending on which liquor you’re using?

We currently have vodka, bourbon, rum, and brandy.

Sorta depends on the use case which we use for what, but overall the bourbon is my favorite.

Based on bottle level the most-used order is:

1. Bourbon
2. Rum
3. Vodka
4. Brandy

Everclear or vodka for a neutral vanilla forward tincture.

Black label bourbon. JD, JW, EW, JB... for some slight oaky vanilla.

Spiced or darker rums, CM, SJ.... for a tasty vanilla.

When adding to beer it's more about the beer and vanilla than the liquor.

Thanks, whoaru99! I hadn't though of brandy, which is a natural choice
