I am in the process of upgrading from my 10 gal Igloo cooler MLT to a keggle MLT. My cooler has a 12" domed false bottom that fits perfectly through the hole that I cut in the top of the keg, but does not cover the entire bottom. I plan on direct firing my keggle MLT for temp maintenance and step mashes but I am worried that the grain around the edges of the false bottom will get scorched. I know there are 15” hinged false bottoms on the market but they are a little pricey. I am just trying to avoid buying another one if I don’t have to. Anybody have experience direct firing a MLT keggle with a 12” cooler false bottom?

Not sure where I bought it, but my false bottom looks like a pie pan and it doesn't cover the bottom of my keg. I also clip on a circular section of nylon cut from a paint strainer bag to the FB to keep the grain out of the dead space. Never had any scorching issues direct firing.
