Ohh, a frickin hockey expert. Alright I have a question for you. When will Crosby start having "symptoms" again or is it really just a nasty yeast infection that keeps him out so much?:p

I'm just kidding. I don't mean to make fun of concussions, just Cindy.

Gotta love the Blues goaltenders this year. Elliott set a franchise record last night for shutouts overall. 14 for the season between him and Halak.

The current playoff seeding system is f'ed. This article says it better than I could.

Looking at the Det v Chi last-game-of-the-season scenario mentioned in the article, it could be a very strange game. Maybe the teams will fight for puck control so they can score on themselves? Would you leave the goalies on the bench or ask them to defend the opponents net? That would be kinda fun to watch...

Great read. I hate more about the current system than I like as it entices teams to lose to draw a better matchup.

Stupid that you can be rewarded for losing. Chicago must be stoked that Keith got a suspension.

Over here (Sweden) with the elitserien league the top finishing teams get to choose who they wish in the first round of the playoffs. Which works out great for the top 3 teams but then Leaves 4th place to get whoever is left.

Would something like this work in the NHL though?

Who is going to purposely lose a game?? Professional players want to win too much to do that. I wouldn't be surprised if a teams management sat out a player or two and took a chance though.

They seed division leaders so that even in so called "weak" divisions there is enticement to play well at the end of the season. They may have a lot fewer points, but in their own division it's still a race to get in.

That's good that they have a secur spot, but it should be for the 8th, look at in the east in my book, it's :

Rangers,
Pits,
Philly,
and then Boston

The system IS inherently flawed. Teams that play in a weaker division are rewarded with a higher seed and easier matchup in the playoffs.

Not to mention if you are the strong team in a weak division (Capitals in years passed), you play 4 weak teams 6 times a year. Meanwhile, in the Atlantic, and Central in the West, you arguably play some of the toughest teams in the league 6 times a year.

And when it all comes down to it, you have more points than these bottom teams yet they still seed higher than you and draw the easier matchup, strictly based on the division they play in.

The reference to the Canes team that was 8th in Points, but were the #3 seed, is the best example of this. It is what it is, but what it is is ridiculous.

Who is going to purposely lose a game??

Exactly, this happens every year in the NFL, remember the Colts were "throwing games" to get Andrew Luck?

All sports playoff systems are flawed, just the way it will always be. Resting all your stars in the last game or two doesn't mean you're trying to lose. wink

Thanks for the link. I agree, system is pretty flawed. Pretty bad when the likely best series in the whole playoffs (Pittsburgh vs. Philadelphia) will be in the first round and the winner will likely come out of the series "bruised". I like the idea of top 16 (league wide), but at least it should be that division winners are only guarenteed to get a spot (not top 3 spots).

[Although looking at the way Ottowa pounded Pittsburgh, I'm not sure I want the Pens playing them in the first round either. :cross: ]

Although my team is playing (Pittsburgh) vs. the Islanders tonight, I might have to watch the Sabres/Caps...sure to be a awesome game with both teams tied with 84 points and gunning for that 8th spot.

[My other slogan for the night is "Go WILD".]

Every year before the playoffs we hear that the seeding is unfair and this team has it easier than that team, yadda yadda yadda. Then the playoffs start, and everyone's theories get blown out of the water.

Hockey is awesome that way.

Hurrah for you. I was busy skiing this: Yes, the Pens blew a gasket last night, it happens once in a while. I'm still feeling pretty good should the Pens play the Rangers in the playoffs. (How's the weather back in Jersey?)

hardly skiing conditions and terrain worth bragging about....

This is what I meant to say, but in a much less complicated fashion.

Homercidal I hope to see your Ferris State Bulldogs in the NCAA National Championship against my Gophers on April 7th!

The (current) NFL thread has close to 3k posts, and shows no signs of slowing down. I don't think I've seen an NHL thread with more than a hundred posts.

Good time for a bump, those chowds are consistently ignorant.
They will be whacking off on pics of Brady while the rest of us are enjoying another epic playoff season.

Snowbird and Alta aren't great skiing terrain? What have you been smoking? [Yes, this year has been "bad" for Snowbird, only 313" YTD, (318" for Alta). ]

Yeah, I know Mt. Hood has gotten good snow this year and B.C. awesome snow. Hurray for you! I was responding to someone from New Jersey.

Weather in NJ has been amazing!! Early spring!! Kinda mad I couldn't ride this year (men ride snowboards, not skis) but the fishing has been great. Back to topic..........

Islanders up 1-0, wooooooooooooooo!!!! Let's GO RANgERS!!!!!!!

I will never understand the obsession with football. To me, it's boring as hvll.

5-10 seconds of action followed by a half minute of standing around doing nothing. Maybe if the didn't constantly go to a huddle it would be palatable. As it is, with the replays and endless, inane yammering from pretty boys, I'd rather watch reruns of M*A*S*H.

Had a cousin was visiting in the fall and insisted on watching a game. I was obliged to let him. I grabbed a pad of paper and tracked the number of plays vs commercials. It was dead even after the first half.

Leafs have given up 3 goals to Carolina in under 21 minutes?

Very nice.. Keep up the good work Buds, and this lottery will be ours like a 7-11 owner "winning" the 6-49.
