Emergency blow off tube?

Brewing my second batch (a hoppy American brown ale) and during the first 24 hours of fermentation the beer and foam blew through the airlock. Reading some other forums I removed the airlock, stuck a sanitized hose into the 6.5 gal carboy, and wrapped some aluminum foil around the mouth of the carboy. This is definitely not airtight and I'm afraid of ruining the batch.

I've tried using the airlock with the hose as a makeshift blow off hose, but can't fit the hose through the airlock exit. It's too late to run to a store to buy blow off plug.

Any suggestions for what I can do to salvage this batch?

To attach a tube to the airlock for a blow-off, it should fit around the interior post not in it.
Tubing for a racking cane or bottling bucket should fit around that and into a jar/cup of star-san.
If you don't have anything sanitary to make a blow off, I would place the carboy into a bucket or pan and loosely cover with sanitized tin foil until the krausen stops foaming out or you have time to get the needed materials.
The krausen coming out should prevent anything getting in, and while messy and not ideal the alternative is to keep cleaning and attaching your airlock.

You don't need to be airtight. Just cover the opening with a piece of sanitized aluminum foil. Once things die down in a day or two, insert a sanitized airlock.

On a side note...What temp are you fermenting?
