Does anyone use an electric setup for extract brewing? I am new to brewing, and the wife won't let me use the stove, so I have been using propane, but I think that I would like to get into electric brewing. I would like to start out at 110v with maybe 2 elements and be able to convert it for when I start doing all grain. I also think that I may want tomtry BIAB at some point. I guess I don't really know where to start. I think that I want at least a 10 gallon kettle, but I guess I don't know. I currently am doing 5 gallon brews and I am starting with around 6 gallons. Links to threads are great. Any help is appreciated

Thanks
Jeremy

If you think you want to eventually try all grain / BIAB, then I would plan your expansion in that direction. I use a eKeggle, it was pretty easy to build and works great. Personally I would skip the 2-110 coils and just go to 220 -5500w ulwd coil.

You can definitely do an extract beer with electric, just make sure to get ULWD heating elements and stir real good when you add your extract to keep it from scorching.

Im in the same boat. Im doing 5gal extract batches on the stove atm. Would like to go with a simple setup to do full boils. My problem is i dont have 220v in my house. At most i have 120v outlets in each room for window air conditioners.

So many choices... I think you're doing the right thing by asking around, here's my personal opinion.

If you want to try all grain BIAB is an easy way to start with little investment in new equipment. The original BIAB set ups were all propane so no problems there.

Perhaps when you've done a couple of all grain brews you'll have a better idea of what direction to go.

Propane v electric is generally a matter of what works best in your personal circumstances. When it comes to volumes, though, get the biggest pots that you can possibly imagine brewing with. Nobody ever downsizes.

A 2000w element on a 20 amp GFI circuit will work for 5 gallon extract batches...might reqire a little patience getting up to temp but it will boil and make you nice brew IME.

As said above...dissolve the extract well before firing the element....even high density $10 elements work well IMO...clean well after use...of course YMMV cheers1
