EDME Red ale

Hi I just bought my first beer kit, it is an EDME Red ale kit. I used to make wine but realized I dont drink much wine but i do drink alot of beer. So ok I get home and start reading the directions and they say add water to bring up total volume to 13.5 liters or 23 liters. I think the guy at the lhbs said it was 5 gal, which I think is about 23 liters, but im not sure. Also the outside of the can says makes 13.5 liters so im assumingthe can is right. I did also buy the 2 lbs of dme to add to the can. Any help for this noob will be greatly appreciated.

6 gallons = 23 liters 5 gallons =19 liters

Most can kits make 6 gallons and there are a lot of poeple make them into 5 gallons because that is the size of equipment they have.

The EDME red kit does only make 3 1/2 gallons per can.

Your kit-in-a-can will make the amount Forrest says. Your extra 2 lbs of DME will brew up 5 gallons of pretty good ale!

I wouldn't boil the syrup. I've made drinkable beer from kit cans by boiling the DME in a gallon or two of water for ten minutes, then switching off the heat and stirring in the syrup until it's all dissolved. Add this wort to chilled water in the fermenter and top off to 5 gallons. Pitch yeast when cool and ferment.

So now im confused again. Lets see if i got this right: The can alone will maked 3 1/2 gals. The can plus 2lbs dme will make 5 gal.

Please let me know if this is correct

I just bought this same kit to make a 3 gal batch, and had the same question about the instructions (although the say to use 700g, which is 1.5 lbs).

So, is the consensus that you do not add sugar if you are making a 3 gal batch?
