I made a starter two days ago with Wyeast 1214 for the Tripel I'm planning on brewing tomorrow. The problem is that the smack pack I used was 5 months old, never really swelled up, and the starter turned a dark brown color.
I got a new pack today, which I'll put on my stir plate, but I was wondering if there's anything I can utilize the dud starter for. I put it in a mason jar and put it in my fridge.
I've heard that most yeast nutrient produced is just old dead yeast. Would it be crazy or helpful to put this old starter into my boil tomorrow? Should I decant it first? This new starter is getting a late start, so I can probably use all the yeast help I can get.
Thanks!
