Dry yeast comes too?

Does this usually happen? My Midwest kit came stocked with both liquid and dry yeast. I paid for the liquid upgrade but I was surprised to find out that I received dry yeast as well. It happened in both the kits(I ordered them together) I just got. Is this a usual occurrence?

I plan on using them in my next 2 batches(I'll just order ingredients instead of a kit). Speaking of which, where is a good place to buy ingredients from? I don't have a LHBS.
 
If your Rochester is Rochester, NY, check your Yellow Pages. I found three homebrew stores in Rochester, NY using Yahoo!. ;)

And no, I've never gotten both yeasts when upgrading before. If you don't want to keep the dry yeast, use it as nutrient - add the dry granules to the boil after you add the Irish Moss or Whirfloc! :D

I'd save the dry packages just in case you have a yeast 'failure to launch' one of these days. Keep it refrigerated and it will last for many months.
 
Midwest kits always come with the dry yeast even if you order the liquid. It costs them more to open the package and remove it than the cost of the packet.

FYI - I just got my hefe kit from midwest with my smack pack upgrade and didn't receive any dry yeast...
 
I recently bought from northernbrewer.com and had a great experience. Fast shipping. I would definitely recommend them as well.

That's strange. We ordered exclusively from Midwest our first fifty batches had piles of extra dry yeast from their packages because we ordered liquid so often. Trouble is that the dry was always Munton's and we gave up using that after the first 25 batches or so.
 
I've ordered from Midwest twice in the past 6 months, substituting liquid yeast both times. The first time there was no dry yeast in either of the kits I ordered, but the most recent one I got both the liquid and the dry. Lately I've been using washed yeast from previous batches, so it's nice to to have a spare pack of dry yeast on hand in case the yeast I'm re-using doesn't work.

Probably because there are no dry hefe yeasts. Wheat, but not hefe.
 
Both WB-06 and Danstar Munich are touted as producing "Bavarian-style wheat beers".

I've never tried either, as I'm not the biggest fan of the style, but...just sayin'. :D

I got muntons and some wheat yeast(for the Hanks Hefeweizen kit). I don't know, I was just surprised, pleasantly of course. And I ;ile the idea of using it as yeast nutrient, what does the dead yeast(after boiling) give the active yeast more to eat?

And to NQ3X, Yes my hometown is Rochester. Webster to be specific, but I go to school in Potsdam Ny, which if anyone is familiar with it, has nothing up there but a Walmart and a Movie theater.
 
I received my order for two kits from Midwest today and both had the dry yeast in the box. The liquid upgrade was in a separate packet with an ice pack. Glad to have it just in case.

Yeast are cannibals. They can metabolize dead cells and use the nutrients to build new cells. It's really quite revolting, but then again so is most of the life cycle of any organism. ;)

Ah. Gotcha. I was in the same situation while at university (Mansfield U of PA). Hell, we didn't even have a movie theatre!

+1 for NorthernBrewer. They are fast, well organized, have quality ingredients, and the one kit I made of theirs, a "sweet stout", was excellent.

Autolysis isn't when yeast eats each other as commonly believed. When yeast cells die they produce a toxin. The toxin is only toxic to other yeast cells (Autolysis). It only happens when there is a lot of dead cells that overwhelm the live cells. This is almost unheard of in homebrewing unless there is major heat damage done to the yeast.

See, this is what I love about this site. I ask an offhand question about dry yeast coming and not only do I learn another use for extra dry yeast but also exactly what Autolysis is. You all are awesome.
 
I second Northern Brewer. There are of course other good online stores, but I just happened to order from them first do to flat rate shipping, they were good, and I've seen no reason to change. Spent over $1000 there last year with no worries yet.
