My uncle gave me a starter kit and some beers his friend made they have been sitting for at least 8 months he said.... As soon as I opened the top they foamed as shown in the picture... Anybody know what could be the cause?

one of these things

1. you added too much priming sugar.
2. you did not check the specific gravity with a hydrometer before adding the priming sugar and bottling
3. you did not mix in the priming sugar well enough so some bottles will be overcarbonated and some will be too flat
4. your beer is infected with wild yeast, etc.

You mean, "your Uncle's friend" :cross:

Fastjake1234, if the bottles are much too carbonated, they could explode. if you bottled less than a month ago, you will want to put them in the refrigerator if possible so you can prevent further carbonation (cold stops the yeast from being active).

how long has it been since they got bottled? if it's been over a month, then the yeast is probably done eating all the sugar, and they won't get any more fizzy.

if the bottles slowly fizz over when you open the tops, then you will be ok (no risk of explosion), but if they bottles erupt like a volcano when you open the top, then there is a risk of explosion. if they are WAY too carbonated (volcano), then you will want to put them somewhere that will control the potential explosions, like a bucket with a lid secured on it, or a box with lid inside a trash bag. cleaning up explosions is NO fun.

For 8 months in bottles, that's not bad at all, just chill them for 48hrs and enjoy ! I had a gushin volcano batch and the bottles were nearly empty when it stopped :)
