I am looking for that LOOOONG dog cookies thread. I think it was in this section but searched and cant find it. Anyone have the link book marked? Going to brew and make some cookies for friends pets rather then toss the grains since outside is FROZEN everywhere usually put the grains in the flower beds/garden.

Thanks!

when searching for this thread I use key words "best friend cookies" and it comes up every time

Thanks cat. I was searching with every combo of dog but that explains why i wasn't finding it.

4 cups spent grain
2 cups flour
1 cup peanut butter
2 eggs

Mix well. Spread onto cookie sheet and pat down to make a dense patty. Score the surface into the sizes you want (I used a pizza cutter). Bake at 350F for 30 minutes to set. Break apart the pieces, set on cookie sheet and bake 3 to 4 hours at 225F to dry out and harden.

I just made these last Sunday - my dog loves them!

Cheers!
K

If you want to get fancy, use a rolling pin to make them nice and even. Then instead of scoring them, cut them with a cookie cutter, my wife found some animal cracker ones at Michaels that worked great. You still bake them at 350 to set them for 30 minutes then lower the oven to 225 until they're done. We made several batches to give them out as Christmas gifts.

....don't know why I thought of this. Has anyone tasted them? Spent grain peanut butter crackers? I know about the bread, didn't know if there are any cracker type recipes. Just popped in my head.

I was going to try these, but they're not too good for dogs that have problems with their anal glands... like mind does. He'd have loved 'em too.

Just making them now. Could i drizzle just a little honey in it?

Dont know if dogs can eat honey.

A little sugar won't hurt them, but I don't think it's necessary. I try to make these with all natural peanut butter and avoid extra sugars as much as possible. Too much sugar could give them diarrhea or worse, cavities :)

Yes, I did try mine. They were a little dry for my taste, as you are supposed to cook the moisture out of them so they don't grow mold. My little Boston Terrior loves these things!

Probably not, but they are a good source of protein for the dog and helps to make the mixture soft and more manageable. Grain, flour, and PB would be a solid brick.

Actually no it is not a solid brick. Thats all I use and I have been doing it for years. I can eat them myself (and do).

That said, I make them with a cookie cutter and they are only 1/2 inch thick, so they are crunchy (good for teeth), but they might be too hard if made much thicker.

Can't argue with the protein though. Our dogs are on regular supplements so I never thought to add anything extra to the biscuits.

Honey is not bad for a dog - but try to avoid refined sugars/corn syrup/molasses, etc. It can cause stomach issues and too much can induce diabetes in canines (over time). And for God's sake do not add any sweetening agent with xylitol in it (common in TicTacs) as it is very toxic to dogs.
