Does this make sense?

Ok so I'm brewing the M-80 extract kit and the directions say to add up to 3 oranges to primary after 2 days of primary fermentation. Will adding fruit at this stage actually accomplish anything flavor wise?

I was under the assumption the fermentation would scrub off flavors and aroma?

I usually add my fruit at primary, but others may have a different take. Fruit takes a while in my opinion, so I get it in as soon as possible.
