I made a yeast starter early in the week and I used some DME that was kinda old. My starter didn't do very well. I didn't get a big yeast cake like I'm used to seeing.

We had this discussion on another forum after a guy opened some jam that had the price in shillings on it... high sugar concentration means it's probably fine. What is the dme stored in? Tinned will almost definitely be okay, not sure about bagged but I would assume it would clump into a rock before its unusable...

If DME does go bad, I would think that it just gets stale and may not taste right. But all the sugars would still be there, so I wouldn't think there would be any affect on fermentation. While it might not make a good beer, it's probably fine as a starter.
