I don't have a problem with authority. Authority has a problem with me.

Seriously though, the only problem with authority I have is the petty tyrant bureaucratic BS in my office. I make it my life's work to piss those people off.

Like the office manager who balked at spending the extra $16 on a hard hat to protect from lateral impacts. My email response simply read "Are you and the company willing to accept the liability for lateral brain injuries?"

Decent citizens should have nothing to fear.

Do you want to be on good terms with the government? Be a responsible citizen and you'll get on just fine, the government working to your advantage. But if you're breaking the rules right and left, watch out. The police aren't there just to be admired in their uniforms. God also has an interest in keeping order, and he uses them to do it. God's appointed authority (i.e., human gov't, leaders, etc) has and will continue to "fail" i.e., fall short...and in that case it's appropriate to a) choose to submit anyway, b) hold the authority accountable, c) replace the authority, or d) rebel and deal with the consequences; depending on the circumstances.

Seriously, though, from school through college through 40 years of working for various Other People's Companies, I can name only three authority figures - real or abstracted - that I still hold in high regard. The rest were all effwits, useless at the minimum and outright company killers in their full glory...

He said "I'm tired of people telling me what to do, I joined the Marines to get away from that!"

He was sober and absolutely serious. It still cracks me up.

I was a section chief in the MC and I had a lance the same way. He was just a hard charger, and a bit of a controller. He's probably a warrant officer by now. He was an excellent marine though, I'll say that. Born leaders move up quickly, and not without some friction.

What about the classic red light in the middle of nowhere. Would you obey the authority of the red light? What would cause you to go through it? What if a cop were at the intersection?
