Hi Everyone,

So me and a buddy are about to embark on first BIAB beer with this kit:

http://www.northernbrewer.com/documentation/allgrain/AG-BlackIPA.pdf

Now, We we will be using Safale US-05 Ale Yest and the O.G. for this beer is 1.075. Do i need a yeast starter for this beer?

I was reading that you don't normally need a yeast starter with dry yeast, but considering this O.G. is at 1.075 (supposedly higher than most yeast can handle with just one pack), should I do a yeast starter? or maybe two packs of safale US-05 ale yeast?

Thanks for the help!
Jon

Personally I think you'll be fine pitching the pack. There are plenty of cells in there to do the job. At most I would rehydrate the yeast, but I have never gone that far and have never had a problem.

Ideally, you would pitch 15 grams, which would be 1.3 packets. So if you've got good aeration practices and solid temp control, you'll probably be fine with 1 packet. If you pushing any of temp limits, you might want 2 packets.

The main reason for a yeast starter is to build up healthy cells and get them ready to go into the wort. Dry yeast just need to be rehydrated and they will be ready. Dry yeast packs have a lot more cells than liquid yeast which is why they say you don't need to do a yeast starter with dry. Plus liquid yeast is a lot more expensive. It is cheaper to do a yeast starter with liquid yeast than it would be to buy two vials. If you need more than 1 dry yeast packet, you can spend another few dollars and buy one.
