Hey all,

I have just moved up to all grain brewing after extract for about 5 years. This seems like a stupid question to me and I cant even believe I am asking it, but I have a friend who tells me that when doing an all grain batch, you arent supposed to crack your base malts.. Say like the 10lbs of Pale Malt I am planning on using.. I think that's ridiculous and everything I find on the web proves him wrong.. But for FINAL CLOSURE, do you crack ALL the grains you intend on using (even the base grains), or do you just crack your "speciality" grains?

Thanks
Chris

Tell your friend he's a *******. If you don't crack it, you may as well not even bother brewing, you will have a giant bowl of cereal with water instead of milk.

EDIT: and welcome to HBT. :mug:

Your friend is a grade A retard. He rode the short bus, didn't he?

Definitely mill all the grain.

Welcome aboard!

Yes, they must be milled or you'll be lucky to get 30% efficiency.

Finally, someone has solved my efficiency problem, you rock sir:rockin:

Seriously though, while I might count on a buddy to take a bullet for me, pull me out of a ditch, or keep my wife warm while I'm away, they aren't always the best source for brewing advice.

Hey all-

Thanks #1, for proving my friend the true "Special-needs" guy that he is, and #2, for making me feel so welcome. I didn't even know that you guys would know that I was new! Thanks again! I'll be hanging out here more often.

Chris
