i have a recipe book that my wife gave me for christmas, it is The Homebrewers recipe guide, by patrick higgins. im looking through the recipies and it has amounts for extract in some recipies but i cant find anywhere if it is DME or LME. could it be either?
 
I bet it has a note somewhere that says what they use. If not, you could always do a little math and figure it out from the OG.
 
the recipe calls for
10lb light malt extract
1 lb crystal malt (40l)
3lbs honey
3/4 brown sugar

OG is 1.079

now how do i figure it?

even w/ LME the OG seems really low for all those fermentables.

10# malt
3# honey
3/4# brown sugar !!

Im willing to bet its LME. If someone has beersmith can they plug it in and see what comes up
 
Using an online calculator I get an OG of 1.082 using LME and 1.095 using DME. The recipe is probably calling for LME, but you can substitute 8 lbs of DME if you so choose.
 
What IffyG said, but it also depends on what type of honey you use and what they used. You could use a honey (your second highest amount of ingredient) that has a higher or lower amount of sugar. It's all relative. 1.082 sounds about right for what you want, 1.079 is very very close, so I'd assume that it's the type of honey that you use with your LME.

I personally don't like using LME because I've had it burn at the bottom of my pot. However, that was my first brew and I've only used DME since.

Also it depends on whether or not you are doing a full or partial boil. I did a partial of a barley wine and topped it off with 2.5 gallons of water to make it 6 gallons... my OG came out much lower than expected (1.091 rather than 1.108). It also depends on how you do your boil.
