Im reusing bottles from craft brews that I drink. What is the best way to sanitize a bunch of these bottles? I understand you cant use Jet Dry in your dishwasher because it adds a film to the inside of the bottle affecting the beer.

I always wash my bottles thoroughly as soon as possible after pouring using just hot water. On bottling day I just give them a go on the vinator using starsan solution. Leave them to drain on the bottle tree while I do the bulk priming and then bottle. Too easy and never have a problem.

I hadn't heard that. I have done 11 batches, all but the first 2 were hot cycled in the dishwasher. (no sanitize cycle) Of those I have tasted 8 and they were all as good or better than commercial craft beers. Maybe it is out of Jet Dry. I haven't checked it in a long time. Just looked and can't tell..

I also use a vinator with Starsan to sanitize the bottles.

If you are concerned about the Jet Dry... most dishwashers have a little dial in the dispenser, this controls how much JD is dispensed in the final rinse cycle. Turn the dial down to the lowest setting (1 is low) and there will be very little JD dispensed. If your dishwasher doesn't have a dial in the dispenser you can probably program the control to dispense very little or none, check your manual.

There is very little chemical remaining on the dishes at the end of the cycle, the main job of JD is to break the surface tension of the water droplets so they slide off the dishes, carrying dirt with it. Testing has been done and the bacterial count of dishes with no JD is much higher that with it.

You can also use distilled vinegar in place of jet dry. It is much cheaper, and will definitely not cause head retention problems. I'm not convinced jet dry causes those problems, but I am convinced vinegar has been an equally effective substitute for our house.

i have been brewing a little over a year now and probably brewed a couple dozen or so batches by now. my ritual is to use hot soapy water to clean the bottles out, rinse them so no soap remains, and set them in the dishwasher.

turn the DW to rinse cycle and click the heat drying cycle on (if equipped, which obviously mine is) and let it go. i use no detergent, just hot water to sanitize. i then either leave them in there (i hand wash our dishes) or set them in a case and cover with saran wrap until need them to bottle with.

works for me. maybe a bit anal, but i don't want to chance losing a good batch because i took a shortcut that didn't work out. YMMV

I stopped refilling the JD dispenser. I rinse out the bottle as soon as it is poured empty, set upside down int he dishwasher to dry, thyen refil;l the 6er in the frige with dry empties. Once the 6er is full, the bottles go into the case in the basement. The day before brewing, 2 cases of bottles come up and run through the sanitize cycle of the DW with no soap. Then on bottling day, the vintinator gives each bottle a quick squirt of sanitizer. Bada Bing Bada Boom

I wash out my bottles woth hot water after use and put them upside down back in the 6 or 12 pack holder.

When I'm ready to bottle I fill my sink with hot water and StarSan. 1 oz to 5 gallons.

Let em soak for up to 10 min or longer if you want the labels to come off easier.

Dump out the starsan/water mixture from each bottle and bottle and cap. I have never run into any problems
