Did Thomas Jefferson brew bad beer?

Interesting insert in my recent water bill. I already knew that the author of the Declaration of Independence failed miserably in his efforts at viniculture and eenology, but apparently Monticello was also a bad brewery.

Not sure. I do remember when visiting, They touched on the fact that he had a beer cellar, and was among the first that regularly served ice cream at his "house". Not sure what would have been considered good beer in the states at that time. I did have recipes from many of the founding fathers at a restaurant in Philly, They were interesting, but pretty good. They probably used modern yeast cultures though.

So something like a Monticello Common ale. Not necessarily a bad brew. I am surprised that he didn't grow Barley on the premises though.
