I put together essentially my first yeast starter last night using 2 cups of DME and 1800 ML of water in a 2000 ML flask with a stir bar. All was looking good, went out for a few hours and come back to a mess on the counter this afternoon.

I was trying to make a big enough starter for a ten gallon batch this Saturday and trying to figure out if I lost all my yeast or whether there is anything I could do to salvage this disaster.

I am thinking I may need to run to the store and buy another smack pack which will be quite a pain. Could I just pitch it, see what happens and then if need pick up some more yeast?

Thanks for any thoughts. It is just sitting on my counter at the moment.

Whatever is in the flask is good, the rest died for the cause. Was the flask covered? The massive amount of reproduction and CO2 production should keep it pretty clean. Possible that something could have fallen in but like a bleeding cut not likely.

You should be good to go. You lost some of your yeast if it spilled over, but not enough to be overly concerned about.
