did you ever price out how much this all costs? i was crawling through but couldnt find anything on the subject..eventually i want to do something similar, probably with c++ instead....i dont know GUI programing

I am going to set aside what I think about the system for just a second and say some things maybe some have said.

1. It must have taken some kind of imagination to come up with this
2. It must have taken a very, very intelligent individual to design it
3. It must have taken some mad, mad skills to build it/write the software

Nice, nice work.

Oh, and I almost forgot. I like the system. Copyright that software and liscence the software and system to be sold at NorthernBrewer, and you've got yourself a money maker.

I've been reading the beta tester feedback. You can either just use the web interface directly, or write some custom HTTP code in front of it. Has more features than any arduino setup I was thinking about.

Most OS's suck at "real time" stuff (like what a PID does) - luckily, I guess brewing temps are okay with only tens of milliseconds granularity. I'd be interested in how the embedded system actually performs. It seems you can load a "config file" as well. Some quick perl/python/whatever to convert BeerXML, and off you go... Maybe??

It may be interesting to see how/if this could tie into John's system/ideas.

I've looked at the website. It's very interesting. But one thing I don't quite get is why the outputs are only 5vdc. I can't find any solenoid valves that are compatible with this, so that means you need multiple relays to use this system with something like a Brutus 10.

Maybe I am missing something... Someone explain it to me?

It's only meant to control relays, not anything directly.

Cool. Glad to hear you're putting this to use. I'm sure everyone would love to see some video of this thing in action if you have time for it. Regardless, have a great brew session.

Almost all of the SSR's I find on e-bay work with as little as 3V.

JB, after checking out your setup, I was wondering if you could answer this for me. Do you have any idea which would be more efficient, cheaper, and consistent to use? A Brutus 10 deal or a HERMS like yours (minus the automated program and touchscreen).

Excellent work by the way, I only wish I had the 'handy' skills you have to complete projects like you do. You are the homebrew DIY master.

Thanks for the compliment. I've never messed with a multi-burner, direct-fire setup like the Brutus 10... only my electric HERMS setup. You can take a look at my original setup here: https://www.homebrewtalk.com/f11/my-new-herms-setup-39422/ It used three love controllers and some finesse to control, but did a good job.

It simply shuts down power to all the relays and stops the process... The toggle button temporarily shuts down power to all the relays but does not stop the process.

I should remember this, but I don't... it is either 3/8" or 1/2" OD - I think 1/2"...

Not really... I have only used it twice so far this year and have had great success both times. The only further enhancement in the near future will be to go ahead and add the PH probe for readout in the software and logging.
