Hi,

It's been discussed in a bunch of other threads and I know some people have never had any problems with cheap Fotek SSRs and some only swear by Crydom, but I'd like to know if there are well made and decently priced SSRs that you are using.

I've heard Crydom, Teledyne, Omron and Opto22 are all pretty good, but I cannot find any of these under 45$ a pop in Canada.

Supposedly, the Auber are rebadged Mager which cost around 8-10$ when buying them from China, so I don't know how good they are.

Are there any good ones in the 20-30$ range?

Am I looking to save a few bucks at the wrong place?

Thanks!

Ebrew supply.has them for $12 seems like a pretty good.deal.. Not sure what brand the are rebranded from?

SSR FOR $12

Ya, they're the same ones that go for like $3-10, some with heatsync and free shipping, on eBay.

Almost everything he sells is easily purchased off EBay china direct. I bought 6 crydom SSRs off eBay for like $30 shipped. They're $60-90/ea retail. I already had one fry on me. So it may be worth using the china direct ones and replacing if needed.

I got my crydom off Ebay and its been working fine. I went through like 7 Foteks before giving up..There pretty cheap..$10-$15 sometimes on ebay

I used two of these in my controller:

Only a few brews on my system so far, but no issues yet, and they seemed to be built well.

For my smaller cheese batches, I built a PID-controlled unit out of a roaster. This was the SSR I used and it's only $6 and change. Not sure it applies, but here you go.

I still use one of these too but beware they have a VERY high failure rate... most only have 10A rated optswitches in them regarless of what the sticker says...
they are made by a number of generic manufacturers in china and are mostly all fake clones. its very difficult to know which ones are better or worse than others because they are all fakes.

Given the uncertainty of some of the imports, I feel much more comfortable buying used, quality stuff off of ebay. The better price they can be had at is just gravy.
Have not had a used Crydom or Opto-22 fail me yet after 7 or 8 years.

Good to know Augie, thanks. I actually dismantled the vat and the PID is still sitting around somewhere - I moved from making smaller (4-5 lbs tommes) cheese controlled digitally to large alpine styles, made in the traditional alpine ways. But I'm glad to know of this because I'm still not sure I won't try again on some kind of PID based system, and this is an area I know zilch about (probably clear by now).

Have you been using the Magers for awhile now Augie? Screw the Foteks, just not worth the gamble for $8 in savings. The Magers do look better though.

I have one fotek still in use actually because its never failed but I use it to fire my 1800w 8 amp load rims... For the BK and HLT in my old pid based panel I used one of the used teledyne dual SSRs that was for sale a while back.
then when I built my new panel I bought one of these,

Its worked flawlessly since day 1.. Funny thing about the mager ones... I ordered a couple off amazon (rebranded as "Berme" brand) and the seller never delivered... ended up getting refunded and bought the dual one above...

I use the cheap $3 ssr heatsinks but I do use a 12v fan blowing through them.
