I had a similar "problem" with yeast ordered online from AHS. I ordered with the cold pack but when both got to me, the cold pack was hot and the yeast was not cold. I made up a starter on Tuesday in anticipation of brewing Friday. After I pitched the vial into the starter, I saw no visible cues of fermentation at all. No bubbling in the airlock, no krausen, no alcohol smell or taste. I thought either it fermented so fast that it was done by the next morning, or it didn't ferment at all. I thought the yeast was probably dead.
I still brewed as I had planned (although I brewed on Saturday) and I decanted the starter wort and pitched as I normally would. I was already planning in the back of my mind to go the LHBS on Tuesday when they opened and get some replacement yeast, then make a call to AHS to see if they would give me store credit or something.
So Saturday night came and went. Sunday came and went. Not a peep from the fermentor. I went to work Monday morning, still no sign of fermentation. When I got home from work Monday evening, I took a peek at the fermentor just for kicks and BEHOLD, it was bubbling away rather meekly. It took my yeast nearly 36 hours to grab hold and start fermenting this beer, but it happened. Now a week later my beer is down to it's intended FG and I'm ready to secondary.
Moral of the story is be patient. Give your yeast 36 hours to make a determination. As your beer is airlock'd and sitting in a sealed fermentor, it's not going anywhere and it's at a very low risk of infection. I'm glad I didn't call AHS and complain pre-emptively, as I didn't actually need anymore yeast. AHS is a great store and they offer top notch products. I don't for a second think they wouldn't have given me a refund, but then again, I didn't really need one.
