I tried a couple of the beers shared from Sat. I'm not clear on who gave me the Quad and the Bret but I tried the Bret and really enjoyed it. :tank:
I haven't had to many sours but It was good and refreshing. I'll try the quad here soon.
heya keith! i gave you those beers, glad you enjoyed the brett'ed saison - definitely more funky than sour. the other beer is quad'ish - it's dark, it's high gravity, and it's belgian, but i'm not certain how well it fits the BJCP's definition of a BDSA or quad. important thing is that it's tasty (at least i think so!).

Which one is the Brett, the bomber marked MS? I was eyeing that one up too.
yup, Ms = batch M, Saison variant (other half of the wort was used for an IPA which is sadly no longer with us...).

First time in the group buy, new to beer brewing but looking to drive down the cost so I can move away from ciders.

From the open split:

10# Briess DME Pilsen Light 50 lb 3440C

Thanks!

Sven: having the sample you brought me just now and it is fantastic! A bit on the spicy side...did you use rye in this, or is that from the hops? I really like the flavor and mouth feel a lot.

Peter78: You continue to impress with your brewing prowess! The gratzer you brewed up was amazing. I really liked the smoke flavor. Which smoked malt did you use and what percentage of the grist was it? The wheat beer was outstanding too! To style and really refreshing after a long day at work.

Thanks all for the samples...really appreciate the opportunity to sample your craft! I continue to be impressed with our cadre of brewers that participate in this group buy!!

Tony

The gratzer was per Stefin's suggestion from the previous group buy. I followed the Northern Brewer's recipe. Used 100% weyermann oak smoked wheat.

Added.

What size batches of beer are you trying to brew? Most 5 gallons, medium gravity ales need 6-7 pounds of DME. 10# would cover you for a batch and a half.
Have you checked into doing all grain? If you have a 4 gallon pot that you can boil for an hour or so, you can brew 2 of those back to back to get 5-6 gallons. Or do partial mashes.

Your Brett "Saison" is incredibly good! I had half that bottle last night, recorked it for another tasting tonight. So much flavor!

It is definitely nice and tart, with a vinous character. It even shows hints of tannins, and in a good way. Thank you for the experience!

Hey Tony, below is the recipe. No rye in there so maybe it's the smoked wheat since the hops is very subdued I find. Had to add the Hallertau because I ran out of EKG... Beer was named after the Scottish metal band "Alestorm"

8.0 oz Rice Hulls (0.0 SRM) Adjunct 1 3.2 %
9 lbs Pale Malt, Maris Otter (3.0 SRM) Grain 2 58.0 %
3 lbs Oak smoked wheat (2.5 SRM) Grain 3 19.3 %
1 lbs 1.3 oz Caramel/Crystal Malt - 40L (40.0 SRM) Grain 4 7.0 %
8.7 oz Munich Malt (9.0 SRM) Grain 5 3.5 %
8.7 oz Honey Malt (25.0 SRM) Grain 6 3.5 %
6.0 oz Acid Malt (3.0 SRM) Grain 7 2.4 %
4.3 oz Caramel/Crystal Malt -120L (120.0 SRM) Grain 8 1.7 %
3.3 oz Chocolate Malt (350.0 SRM) Grain 9 1.3 %
0.90 oz Hallertauer Mittelfrueh [4.00 %] - Boil 60.0 Hop 10 8.9 IBUs
0.70 oz Goldings, East Kent [5.00 %] - Boil 60.0 Hop 11 8.6 IBUs

I'm probably going to use the first 6 lbs for a stout w/ steeping grains. I can always pick up another lb or two at the LHBS (perhaps of a different style/color).

Looking into all-grain, but I have limited room in my 1BR apartment (no patio), and no 240v outlets for electric. I'm currently brewing extract in a 1650W electric turkey fryer that I can get a 5 gallon boil going in with the lid partially on (and an additional 1.5" or so of space in the pot. I do have a gas stove I can do a smaller boil on at the same time.

If that turkey fryer gets you a rolling boil with 5 gallons, even with the lid partially on, you can brew 4 gallon all grain batches. Mash in a cooler or do BIAB. I used to split my boils over 2 pots on the electric stove, then combined, chilled, and filled the fermentor.

You can always plug in one of those heat sticks (1000W or 1500W) for some extra oomph.

For the gents who were interested in the welded brewstands:

I was able to get the bottom frame welded today on one (it's been a rough few months with work and family issues). I plan to do the top frame and supports over the next week. Will post pics along the way.

Nice job! Why don't you open your own thread in the DYI subforum? I'd sub!

ON TOPIC:

Can we ask our supplier if they can get the BSG Hop Extracts?
i'm all for this as long as we can get it in pre-measured amounts. trying to split a large amount of hyper-concentrated hop goo is a bad, bad idea.

i'm sure we've discussed this before, but what about getting unconcentrated hops? (AKA flowers and pellets...)

We can, but the price list I got last time was higher costs than mail order hops. I use farmhousebrewing amongst others and their prices beat the prices I got last year. I will ask again. BTW, farmhousebrewing does have the extract. I have used it both ways and prefer to buy in bulk, depite the gooey mess, as it is a lot cheaper...

I brew most of my beers with hops from farmhousebrewing. Their customer service is excellent and I haven't had any issues with their hops either.

Good to know. I've been waiting for 2014 crop to be available on Farmhousebrewing before i put in a big order.

Actually, I just ordered Cascade Hop Extract (2 oz / each container) for $15/each from HopTech. That's about 60ml, which equates to about 600 IBU worth of Cascade power, if for the full boil. However, it being Cascade, I will use it for massive late hop additions. First beer on new brewstand will be the pilot for a Super Cascade late hopper.

They also have Fuggle, Saaz, Hersbrucker, EKG, Willamette and a British Blend. The also have that IsoHop stuff where it is just for bittering (already isomerized).

P.S. That is about $7 cheaper for the Extract than Farmhouse has it for.

I'll take:

1 sack 9 BRI1002 Briess 2-Row Brewers 50 lb
10# Château Biscuit 25 Kg (55 Lb.) CAS1051 from the existing split

What kind of bags should I bring to help the cause?

Don't get your math. 100 grams is about 3.6 ounces. $22/3.6 is about $6.11 per ounce so 2 ounces would be $12.22 which is about $3 cheaper than HopTech.

I only have used this for bittering, and mainly to reduce the amount of hop material for BIG HOPPY beers like Pliney the Elder or similar beers.

Yup, you're right. Math was off, but no matter because Farmhouse doesn't have in stock.. Their stuff, though, isn't varietal specific. The Hop Tech stuff is, so you know what flavors/aroma you will get from late additions.

Actually, I just checked and they are about the same price...only the varietal is $15...the bittering can is $12.95. I have bought this somewhere else as well but can't remember where...small shop in WA state I think that sells only hops. <EDIT> Found it...yakimavalleyhops...same price, $22 a can.

Just wanted to bump this as I didn't see a reply or an update to the order sheet. Apologies if that isn't the right process.

Added! Sorry, I hadn't checked the thread in a few days. A bump is good.

Grocery store bags without holes are fine. We prefer to double bag those, just in case. Pick up some extra ones next time you're checking out.

Thanks for the add.

And I'm in MoCo, those bags are 5 cents each man! Pricey stuff! j/k I'll steal some from the gf's stash. Or maybe just head up to Fredneck to do some shopping.

I hate MoCo with a passion :D I work there but I refuse to do anything else there. Everything in Frederick is so much... nicer! :mug:
