I've done numerous SMaSH beers with just straight Mosaic and they're a tad too much on the fruity side so I'd like to add some dankness to a low ABV IPA I'm working on. I'm thinking I'll throw in some Simcoe and Columbus. What do you guys think?

Batch Size: 11 gallons
Est Gravity: 1.052
Est FG: 1.011
Est ABV: 5.5%
IBU: 73.6
SRM: 5.6

Mash @ 151F for 60 min

  • 19 lb 2 row
  • 1 lb Crystal 40L
  • 1 lb Cara-pils
  • 1.5 oz CTZ @ 60 min
  • 1 oz Mosaic @ 15 min
  • .5 oz Columbus @ 15 min
  • .5 oz Simcoe @ 15 min
  • 1 oz Mosaic @ 5 min
  • .5 oz Simcoe @ 5 min
  • .5 oz Columbus @ 5 min
  • 1 oz Mosaic @ 0 min
  • .5 oz Simcoe @ 0 min
  • .5 oz Columbus @ 0 min
  • 2 oz Mosaic 7 Day Dry Hop
  • 1 oz Columbus 7 Day Dry Hop
  • 1 oz Simcoe 7 Day Dry Hop
  • US05

1.4 Bittering to Gravity ratio. Is that what your going for?

As far as the fruitiness goes i believe you would only need to change your mid/late hop additions and lower fermentation temp.

Comet in dry hopping is notoriously dank and resiny. I also have found the 2014 galaxy crop to be extremely weedy.
I'd also switch up the additions. I just kegged a piney dank black IPA with this hop schedule: If I wanted more dank i'd switch rakau for columbus
@60: 1 oz magnum
@15: 1 oz simcoe / 1 oz rakau
@0: 1 oz simcoe / 2 oz rakau / 1 oz chinook
* 60 min hopstand before chilling *
@+30min into hopstand: 1 oz simcoe / 1 oz rakau / 2 oz chinook
@dry: 1 oz simcoe / 1 oz chinook
@dry2: 2 oz comet
@keg: 1 oz simcoe

Try a blend of Columbus and Target if you really want 'dank'. Some Simcoe might top it up nicely.

Thanks guys. I want to leave the Mosaic in there to have some citrus notes. I should have said I don't want it straight up, 100% dank. Anyway, my plan is to brew 10 gallons of this on Friday so hopefully it's good!

So how did that go?

I changed the hop schedule last minute from Mosaic to Citra and went Simcoe 2 to 1 on the Citra and CTZ. Came out awesome, I wouldn't change a thing.
