About to keg for the first time :D and I read a lot of people cut the last 3/4" off the end of the dip tube to avoid sediment that may accumulate.

Necessary, common, or no need?

I don't have problems. The first pint will usually only have a little. No need to cut it

I agree with the other two replys NOT to cut. Once you cut you can't put it back if you change your mind.

If you do cut part of the dip tube you risk bending and not getting the last bit of beer out of the keg. Not worth the potential benefit to me.

I bent my dip tube instead of cutting it. Works great for me. I only leave maybe a half a pint behind and all sediment stays behind as well.

Like I said it works for me but, it is not needed. I would run a few batches through you keg set up before you cut or modify any thing.

I'd rather pour the sediment out in the first pint, then be able to empty the keg completely with the remaining clear beer.

Every keg is going to have a different amount of sediment, so 1/2", 3/4", 3/8"....who knows? Just accept the fact that the first pour or two will have some sediment. The other thing is that once you get the sediment out it is gone. If you leave it down there and then move the keg it goes back into solution and you will have to wait for it to settle again. IMHO

IME, some sediment will remain on the bottom of the keg. A few pours won't get rid of it all and moving the keg will inevitably re-suspend what remains. The only way I have found to eliminate the sediment completely is to rack the beer to a second keg once it has sufficiently cleared. I do not cut the dip tubes and I try to avoid moving the keg once tapped if possible.
