Firestone Keg CO2 Dip Tube

I have a Firestone Spartanburg VI keg with an odd CO2 dip tube. The dip tube I have is on it's last legs. I was wondering if this plastic dip tube needs a o-ring. Also I was wondering why you even need a CO2 dip tube. Thanks.

The kegs were designed to use dip tubes under both posts to enable the dip tube O-rings to actually seal the posts to the dip tubes and the threaded risers. Won't work without it...
