Just so you know, from what I've seen in BYO and numerous other places online, Heady is no longer using Conan. If you're looking for Alchemist's house strain, then you're good, just didn't want you to be disappointed.

I did not know :) thanks for that. . Either or would do

Maybe they were having trouble with it creating Belgian like esters? Seems the cloners are running into problems with that if they don't control the temp well.

Pretty sure that was a misquote. There is a dialogue about it on HBT and on TheMadFermentationist.

Be interesting to see if Heady will lose any praise since the flavor was thought be hugely driven from the Conan. I also wonder why they stopped using it.

Forgive me for not siting references, but I'm working from memory. If I remember accurately, the quit using it due to a problem with the original yeast strain evolving into a new strain that wasn't up to snuff. They are using a new house strain, but nobody has complained about the flavor profile since.
I think I remember reading it on an interview with the BeerStreetJournal, but may be wrong.

Personally, I have followed both discussions I mentioned earlier and no one has been able to produce anything with John Kimmich saying that he changed the yeast. Everything has been rumor or speculation. He was on a podcast called Under My Host in October and said that their beer is super consistent and nothing has changed. He wasn't specifically referencing the yeast but he did say that nothing changed.

Excellent! Great info man.
BTW, your MAW box is taking shape, and it looks promising. The weather next week looks to be significantly improved, but the 7th you should have a big box of awesome.

Awesome. Thanks again man. Also, I'm not saying The Alchemist hasn't changed their yeast, I'm just saying that no one has produced any proof yet.

I hope you like it all. I sent the buffalo sweat vanilla so you could try it. I'm not a big fan of it myself, but a lot of people seem to love it. I like the regular buffalo sweat a lot, but I don't think the vanilla is adding anything to it. Just my opinion.
I also tried to get most of the Boulevard smoke stack series that was available at the time.

I think I will - these are all right up my alley. Can't wait to start sampling them this weekend!

You dont like the vanilla and think the regular is better?!?!?! You must be from lawrence. ;)

That may be true but if they did change yeasts they might not want people to know about it. It could change people's perception about the beer and hurt sales. But if consumers don't know anythings changed they won't anticipate anything different about the beer and would more than likely never notice any difference, if there were any.

Just sayin

Hurt sales? Heady Topper? Bwahahaha! :D

I get a perfumey flavor from the vanilla. I think I would rather have the regular also; haven't had them side by side though.

You lawrence guys are killing me haha. Never gotten the perfumey flavor though. After I had the vanilla one, the original just isnt as good as it used to be. Both great beers though for the price.

Sorry to bring it up again lol. Every generation of conan will give off slightly different flavors/scents. The yeast is always changing. After 15 generations or so they start over. I've had tons of heady and can also say that every batch has never tasted identical. This information came straight from jen, while on a private tour of the alchemist. I may be off about the generations, it may be a little less or a little more.
