Hey, I'm just wondering other than the supplies caps etc, what do you spend on average for 5 gallon batch or other?

So after you have the initial items you need? On average, as an extract brewer, my batches can run between $30 and $45 depending upon specialty grains, yeast, and hops. Also, $4 for bottled water. I never bothered topping off with anything but.

Is that what you were looking for?

Depends on what kinds of beers you brew and the shop where you're buying your ingredients. LME is usually cheaper than DME, although my coworkers and I all have different opinions on which is better. DME usually fives you a fuller flavor, but LME works totally fine if your using a large amount of steeping grains to add complexity. Higher OG beers will mean a higher overall price. Big hoppy IPAs will also drive it up.

LME prices at our shop are $10.99 per 3.3lb can (Briess) or $2.19 in bulk (also Briess). DME is $4.69 for 1lb or $11.89 for 3lb. Hops run anywhere from $1.59 per oz. to $2.59.

As far as all-grain, you're looking at substantially lower prices. I've seen guys make it out for $15. Hops and yeast included.

Usually for a 1.054 OG batch with a 2oz. hop bill you're looking at about $25 to $30 bucks at our shop.

Hope that helps:mug:

The steam beer I just brewed was $25 for all of the ingredients+yeast (I did get a 10% discount from my LHBS so that helps). That comes to about $0.50 a bottle.

The hefe i made previously was $10 more expensive than that. I am doing partial mashes but this Steam beer I used significantly less LME and more grain so that probably attributed to the lower cost. Also a half oz less hops.

Not counting equipment costs:
Cheapest: $22 (including yeast @ $2.95) Blonde
Most Expensive: $62.75 (including yeast @ $5.95) Double IPA

I am slowly building a yeast bank so I will get somewhere around 8 batches of beer out of the yeast I bought. I also buy RO water from the grocery store so that is about an extra $4.10 per batch. A few misc. expenses (whirfloc, water additions, propane/natural gas, CO2, etc) that aren't figured into those costs.

*edit- Should note these are all grain batches.

For a 5g batch of 1.055 beer, I pay:

  • Malt $11.00
  • Hops $4.00
  • Yeast $1.00 (including cost of starter)
  • Total $16.00
But I brew all grain, and buy everything in bulk

-a.

I usually estimate somewhere in the area of 40-75 cents per 12oz. depending on the recipe.

This being said I've also spent 125 on a grain mill, like 450 building a keezer, whatever I spent on a cooler mash tun, my fermentation equipment, soon to be a propane burner and larger pot, then a wort chiller, then this, then that.........it just never ends (and I love it :D)

I learned the biggest key to price is don't buy a get. Get the recipe and buy the ingredients. You'll local brew shop till be happy to help.

Looking at a simple american pale ale i priced at about $21. Not bad for over 2 cases of beer.
