I took Northern Brewer's Saison de Noel recipe to my LHBS and had them make up a kit w/a few substitutions:
- 0.5 lbs Belgian Aromatic malt
- 0.25 lbs Weyermann Carafa III
- 0.25 lbs Weyermann CaraAroma
- 6 lbs Breiss Light Golden DME (instead of 6 lb pilsner malt syrup)
- 1 lbs D-90 Candi Syrup
- 1 lbs Briess Pilsen DME
- 1 lbs Amber Candi Sugar (instead of 1 lb corn sugar)
- 1 oz US Magnum
The recipe says the OG is ~1.070 but mine clocked in at 1.132. At first I thought it was an error, but multiple readings gave the same result and I checked the hydrometer with water as well.
Any idea what would account for a higher OG?
I'm not advanced enough to be familiar with the nuances of Breiss Light DME vs. Pilsner malt syrup or Amber Candi vs corn sugar, but I'd guess it's one of those given all else was equal..
