Hey folks. JC here. First post. I’m bypassing the introduction thread and going straight for the throat, so to speak.

What’s a collar? In the first post Ed says the space on the compressor hump can be used to hold a keg if you ‘built a big enough collar’. I’m going to start corny-kegging soon and have been browsing the ads for a freezer, but I know I want to be able to accommodate at least3, if not 4 kegs.

I may be needing that… um… ‘hump’. And so I guess I'd need a ‘collar’ too??

This is getting really weird in an S&M sort of way. Over and out before I do any more damage to my reputation here.

A collar is a 2x6 wooden frame (can be different heights) that sits under the lid and on top of the bottom section of the freezer. It allows you to add taps through the wood instead of the freezer wall.

Check out this link for an example: https://www.homebrewtalk.com/f35/wood-preference-keezer-collar-78325/

Ah, thanks. Perhaps more advanced than I require/care. It does actually lead me to another question, and that is why ever go with the collar instead of just going up through the lid of the freezer (where I presume there aren't any cooling coils)? But I realize that's off-topic here, and so I will search for the appropriate place to post.

Thanks again. Mods, feel no guilt about deleting my non-pic posts.

Plus the added weight on the lid is awkward when you have to open it all the way to place kegs into or remove kegs from...;)

Exactly, although it is said that the hinges can hold the extra weight of the collar if attached to the lid.

The two main points of having a collar are:
1. If you have a compressor hump, you can fit a corny on it.

2. If you EVER had to sell the freezer, since you never drilled through the freezer lid or wall, you could remove the collar and put it back to its original form.

I installed a collar mostly because I don't want to hassle with towers. I use the space over the hump for storing grain & hops.
