Have an oktoberfest in my chest freezer lagering. Its munich and vienna double decotion mash with perle for bittering and tettnang for finishing yeast is wyeast bavarian lager.

Its day three in the fermentor. The smell coming out of the airlock is what i would call supermarket coffee cake. It smells like the hard vanilla icing on top of the coffee cake with hints of pastry breadiness. No filling to this coffee cake. Done several lagers and have never had one smell like this. Also never used this yeast so maybe its that.

Any ideas?

I usually describe the smell of lager yeast as they ferment as, well pretty disgusting. A while back I popped open the fermenter of an American Light Lager that I was worried about, it was just starting to take off and I got a very strong bread smell. Strange things happen in fermenters huh?
