My first time here and my first idea for my own Recipe Well here goes I would love to try making a Coffee Vanilla Porter with using full pot of Coffee and Vanilla extract but my dilemma is when to add the coffee and when to add the vanilla so any ideas of when to add them? I am going to make this out of a malt extract because this is what I'm set up for I'm not up to grain brewing yet so take pity on me.

2 vanilla beans in secondary
24oz cold brewed coffee in bottling bucket

So that little coffee and 2 beans is enough? I would have thought more was needed to get the coffee flavor and vanilla extract would get the full flavor but thanks for the input!

Ended up on this thread after searching for a way to add coffee because I recently tasted the first coffee and vanilla beer I've ever had. It was an Atwater Vanilla Java porter.

I would suggest against the vanilla extract and for the beans. You can definitely taste the difference in the finished product. Atwater's porter has a really nice coffee flavor as it starts out and switches to something that I can only say reminds me of a vanilla Pepsi. Same vanilla flavor as a soda, and it kinda put me off. Then again, if that's the flavor you're looking for.....it's your beer!! ;-)

If you want to try it, put the Atwater Vanilla Java porter up against a Breckenridge Vanilla porter. Atwater = extract, Breckenridge = beans.

I just finished the Dry Dock partial grain Vanilla Porter kit from NB that uses beans. The vanilla flavor is very nice and sutle. I don't think I would have liked it as much if it used the extract for the flavoring. Also I wouldn't know how much flavor you would lose due to adding the coffee. It sounds good, but you might cover something up.
