I just found another place in McKinney: Collin County Fire Equipment 315 N McDonald, Mckinney, TX 75069. Its 2 miles North on 5 from Ferguson. They do CO2 exchanges 20lb for $25 (extra $19 if Hydro is out of date) and 5lb. for $12.50 ($19 if Hydro is out of date). Only $5 cheaper for 20lb fill; however my cheap $20 craigslist tank needs a Hydro test Frerguson wanted $85 total. CCFE is $44. I'm going check these guys out today or tomorrow. I let you know how it goes. BTW - Home Depot exchange is a bust unless you have one of their brand tanks. Plus the tanks are female threaded (I know there is an adapter).

Koetter is right around the corner from my office. When you run out I wouldn't have a problem bringing with me and getting it filled at lunch or something. Hate to see you trade a brand new tank in! Hopefully soon, I will have one so I could fill them both at the same time.

I'm confused. This looks like ferguson. Why do they not feel they can check filll level of a 5lb refill, but they are a good choice for exchanges? What did i misunderstand?

It is ferguson, just pointing out the maps.
As i understood it the 5lb tanks they have come from somewhere else. They have the capability to fill but not for 5lb tanks. I'm not sure why as they can accurately fill 2.5lb and 10lb and higher.
I appreciated his honesty but I didn't press him on the issues as to why. I've exchanged 3 tanks there and have hit about the targets for pressurizing and serving amounts.

My tank is a new 5lb aluminum tank from kegconnection. I don't see a stamp (in ink) anywhere that looks like a hydro test date. I assume with no stamp, I'll need to pay for a hydro test. Should I expect a new tank to have a hydro stamp? Do new tanks typically need a hydro test on first fill, or are they tested at manufacture?

I dropped off my tank at CCFE tonight. I was quoted $12 for a refill. They just pick up the tanks in McKinney and haul them to Dennison for refill. Thus, the refill is not instant and will require parting with the tank for a few days. Since this is a new (empty) tank and I have no kegs filled yet, I don't see this as an immediate problem. I'm realizing now, though, that I didn't even get a receipt or pick-up ticket (didn't pay anything) for my tank, so that is a little odd.

Got my tank back today. $12.99 after tax for a 5lb refill. It took 6 calendar days to get the tank back. The guy who filled the tank called to tell me it was full and then gave me a price of $20-something (the price included a hydro test). When I mentioned my tank was new, he checked his notes on the tank, agreed it didn't need hydro, and corrected the price to a CO2 fill-only price. He said they would not have performed hydro on it due to the 2008 manufacture date. I'd rate the overall experience "meh". As long as the phantom hydro charge was an honest mistake and not a mode of business for them, and you can live without your tank for several days, i suppose it is a decent option for tank refills in McKinney area. I think I'll look for an on-the-spot refill place for my next refill, though.

Talked to the Ferguson McKinney location to ask about refilling my new 10lb cylinder. He said they would be happy to fill it there, but same story, can't guarantee how much it will fill. I asked about this and he told me they would just hook it up to a 50 pounder and wait until it quit. This means as soon as the pressures equalize, you're done. So at least he's honest about it.
He also says they send these out to the Frisco location that has a pumper. This means they can fill the cylinder to proper capacity. Said it would be $24.

yikes i would not trust that fill, nor would I want to deal with all that. Fire safety or welding shop.
I asked one of the places that sells kegs in Plano that offers exchanges for 5 lb bottles and they said they send the empties to Ferguson also.
So, at least this way you keep your bottle (hopefully) and cut out the middle man. Any place that refills them will have a similar setup. That is, if they do it right with a pumper. I suspect other places just fill from a larger cylinder and that's why we see reports of being 'short changed' on fills.

I initially went to the Home Depot off Custer and Virginia, and the guy there said all the only tanks they carry are female threaded and I would have to buy an adapter. After a lot of unsuccessful stops at different locations (most places had nothing but empties for the longest time), I finally found a full one at the 75/380 location. I exchanged my very old, steel, way outdated hydro test tank for a new looking, male threaded, aluminum one with a recent test(and plastic collar, which was an extra bonus).
Total cost for this 20# swap was like $22.50. So, I would say if you need a hyrdo test on a 10# or 20# tank, or just have an old beat up steel tank and you want a nice looking aluminum one just swap it out at Home Depot. Obviously no guarantee they will have nice looking aluminum ones, but if your tank is as crappy as mine was (cheap craigslist find) then whatever they have to offer will surely be better.
The guy asked me what I was using it for, when I said beer dispensing he told me they are technically not supposed to sell their tanks for food/beverage use. He was cool about it, though.
With that said, anybody know of a place that will exchange a 5# tank without looking at my current tank's hydro date?

I went to Homebrew HQ and they had recommended Mr. G's at coit and 15th st. You can buy used 5lb tanks and they are full of CO2 for $90 (at HB HQ they are $100new and unfilled). And their exchange rate is ~$17. I bought a used tank today, and it looks to be in great condition.

AirGas on Forest Lane. 5# exchange for $15.53 including tax.
I've used Ferguson Gas in Frisco and it was about $17 for a 2.5lb refill.

I've also gone to Shax Liquor in Lake Dallas and they charged $5 for the 2.5lb refill. Note that Shax only fills from a tank in the rear of the store and I was about a lb short, but that was ok with me. I need to get a 5lb tank!

Homebrew HQ suggested ParkIt Market for me, although it probably depends on where you live. There's an AirGas location closer to me, so it might be worth it even if I have to pay more.
ParkIt Market looked interested though, how's the beer selection there, anyone know?

Does the tank need to be cold? Did you check final weight to assure you get a full tank?

It was not requested/required for my tank to be cold, and I did not check my tank's weight after filling (something I plan to do the next time) However, I did hear a couple rounds of venting from the back room, which I assume is why my tank was cold when returned. Admittedly, I am new to this.

I ended up exchanging my tank for a different Aluminum tank at Kegs and Barrels on Parker in Plano. $18+ for the exchange and the new tank is actually newer (05/11) than the one I traded in (10/09). :rockin:
Unfortunately, my recently full "new" tank was drained empty by a faulty gas line. Dang. Gotta start all over again.....

Holy cow, I know this is a year-old post right here, but you just saved me a ton of cash and a bunch of worry. I live in Little Elm, so was hoping to find somewhere reasonably close to home. Shax's? I grew up in Lake Dallas. Been to Shax's a hundred times. Would never have guess they refilled tanks. And it's cheaper than anywhere else I've found. Thanks man!

And another thumbs up to Koetter Fire Protection. I went in there during lunch today and they filled my 5 LB tank for a total of $10.72. I just went around back and a guy met me at door on the south(ish) corner of the building and took me inside while they filled it. They just set it on a big scale, hooked everything up, set the tare and filled 'er up in a matter of seconds!

Funny that this thread got a bump today. I re-read it last night as i was going to get my new tank filled today. Because i had to go to lhbs for o-rings anyway, i decided to go ahead and trade the tank there since thats where i bought it. $20 for a 5 lb trade at wine makers toy store. Koetter is pretty close to my office so i will fill there from now on.
