Assuming you keep a turbulent flow in both the coil (check) and the bulk area (check, with your stirrer) the efficiency will be very good. In my system, with the second IC, I have more surface area than the Therminator but none of hte head aches (IMHO).

My only question is...

With 40 pounds of ice and 4 gallons of water to start with, can I even drop the coil and stirrer into my HLT... hrmmmmmmmm That may be too CHUNKY to drop it through. I need to test THAT first.

Here is a chiller/heater I am going to use in my E-HERMS system. Shoulld be able to get from boiling temp to around 70 degrees by the time the beer makes it way to the end. Basically it operates like a counterflow.

I use pellet... I can bag them... but... will the break material break me??

My normal protocol is bagged pellet and recirculated kettle. Break and all.

I haven't plugged my Chill wizard yet. Chill wizard = March pump driven Therminator with inline oxygenation stone.

Before I spend ANY money, I am testing the use of my HERMS coil to recirculate my wort through my HLT filled with the ICE cooling fluid.

My HERMS coil has 7.3' of surface, so it may work.

Closed system cooling WORKS, here are some numbers:

5.5 gallons BOILING
4.0 gallons 65F water and 44 pounds of ICE

5 minutes in:
COOLING WATER TEMP 50F
KETTLE TEMP 148F

10 minutes in:
COOLING WATER TEMP 54F
KETTLE TEMP 99F

15 minutes in:
COOLING WATER TEMP 52F
KETTLE TEMP 81F

20 minutes in:
COOLING WATER TEMP 50F
KETTLE TEMP 66F

25 minutes in:
COOLING WATER TEMP 48F
KETTLE TEMP 57F

30 minutes in:
COOLING WATER TEMP 48F
KETTLE TEMP 57F

That is awesome! And that was just with your HERMS? I would say that is proof of concept, now you can reduce the time if you desire, or spend you cash on something else!

Coolumb. I am glad you tried this, I think it will be in my future as well once I get my battle-station fully operational.

Yes, this ONLY utilized my HERMS coil for cooling. 25 minutes to 57F :D
