I used to make a ton of beer in those apartments, but I started running out of room!

Let me know if you need any help or advice or something. Or if you just want to trade some brews. I live just up the hill past Hurontown.

That's awesome. I'm moving in over Memorial Day and looking forward to trying the Dubbel they have on tap.

You ran out of room with all those closets in the apartment? Ha, I can't believe how many closets are in the apartment.

And thanks for the offer of help/advice. I just got into homebrewing, so I'm sure I'll have questions. Lemme know if you're ever in the KBC this summer and I'll buy you a pint. (Gotta love those 2.50 pints)

Actually, I provided the yeast for that Dubbel. It was a strain that I mixed and propagated for some of my homebrews, then Tom (the current brew master) showed interest in making a Dubbel. So I gave him a yeast prop from one of my batches. I've got a couple killer Dubbels (brewing another 11 gallons of Dubbel this Saturday actually) that you'll love if you like that kind of beer.

Yeah, and then some. I had to give a lot of it away. It helped that my (at the time) brew partner took some home with him as well, but I still couldn't fit it all in the closets. I had a wall of cases stacked in my room for the overflow! (I was in the southeast apt. facing Shelden Ave.)

We live in a small town; I could be at KBC in 5 minutes. Just let me know. And, likewise, you're welcome to sample some of the beers I have on tap at my house (all home brew of course). If you want, you can join for a brew day. That's the best way to learn the ropes. If you join from the beginning, see it from crushing grain to pitching yeast, you'll get a very good idea of how the process works.

I may be a bit older than you, but I remember the days of the $1.50 pint at KBC. And free peanuts. That's back when they only had the one side (before the non-smoking side opened), and when the canning machine was downstairs (before the wholesale brewery opened in South Range).

I remember when I was bar tending there, people from out of town would be so surprised at the prices. Guys would buy 3 pints and I'd say "six dollars," and he'd say "no, for all three of them," and I'd say "right. six dollars total." They usually left a huge tip after their pleasant surprise. (This was when pints were $2.00.)

Still! $2.50 is a great price for a fine beer!

I do have uncles that live/work near the Detroit area.

Who are you thinking of? If it's not me, then I'm sure I know the person you're thinking of.

Well, I doubt you are who I was thinking of... Only because you used the term "uncles." (plural) The guy I was thinking of went to school for engineering in the UP, is into motorcycles, homebrews (which I recently found out), and only has one uncle in the metro Detroit area. His other uncle is in Muncie, IN, and his dad lives in Fife Lake, MI. BTW... The guy I am thinking of is Bart. The one major thing that threw me off is that I thought Bart was living in the Traverse City area. Ohwell, at any rate, welcome aboard HBT Tiber!

Ah, nope, not me. Strange coincidences though. Sounds like the story of my life, except for living in TC. I'm originally from the Petoskey area, which is sort of close to TC, though.

I have seriously been thinking of taking SWMBO back up to the UP this summer and staying at my uncle's cabin near Phoenix (just off 26 near what we call 10-foot...not sure if that's a family term or a local thing) since we havent been there in a couple years. I've been wanting to meat (that's right, meat ;)) mrs Yooper for a while now as she's been down here once or twice and I've been busy.

If I finalize any plans I'll let everyone know. It's be great to be a part of a HBT Copper Country get together!

I'd love you to stop by this way!!!!! Just let me know when/if you are coming and I'll do my best to make it happen.

I rarely get to the Copper Country but I'd be willing to go up that way for a meet up. My cottage can be on the way to 26, too, if you wanted to stop here.

Now thats pretty cool. Been anxious to try it; it went on tap the day I left for my brief summer vacation.

That is the apartment I'm staying in; Apt 1. What did you go to Tech for? I'm studying civil engineering and surveying.

Sounds great. I'll definitely keep in contact over the summer!

I am working in Georgia this week and as of last night when I wrote that post it looked like I was leaving today (Friday) and not coming back for a while. Now they want me coming back every 2-3 weeks for a while so this summer might be shot between work and getting stuff done at home. Of course they cant keep me here in the "winter" when it gets down to 50 degrees...has to be in the 95+* summers!

Still, I might be able to fit in a UP vacation...Yoop you say your cottage "can be on the way to 26" how close are you talking? I really dont know the area that well but my uncle lives in Houghton so that's the way we'd be going.

FYI...he (us when were there) are regulars of the B&B in houghton and the Cliffview up in Phoenix...

If you look at a map, Iron River is about 1.5 hours from Houghton. My cottage is about 10 miles west of Iron River. If you go west from my cottage, hwy 45 is 15 miles. Then, north on 45 will take you to up to 26. It's probably 10 miles out of your way vs. going up 141 to M28.

You can stay overnight at the cottage if you'd like- it's comfortable and informal and open to friends at all times.

You know...I've been to the UP about 10 times in my 26 years but have never been to the southern (southwestern?) UP. Looks like you're in the middle of a national forest...must be a beautiful area! You got me all excited but I cant lead anyone on as I have no idea how things are going to pan out this summer. If I come up it will definitely be in July to miss the "not-as" buggy season! I very appreciate the invitation to stay and very well may take you up on it!

Yoop...this may just be me a little sauced up on my last night in GA but I remember when i first joined here on HBT and you were immediately one of the nicest, welcoming people I found. I have always wanted to meet you since then...:cross:

If you find yourself in Houghton, PM me.

Oh, and the B&B has good pickled eggs!

Oh man...I grew up hating the eggs only because my dad and uncle loved them and I had to "smell" them afterwards...but now I LOVE them! I remember the eggs before the health dept made them keep them in the fridge. I was young at the time but I remember the first time we went up there and they werent sitting on the counter.

I could totally go for a nice, hot, burn-the-top-of-your-mouth tombstone pizza right about now...

I'll def. PM you if things come through...

I think you'll find that most yoopers are like that. One of the many reasons I love it up here in the UP! Good people, good scenery, great beer! :mug:

If you go to the Dog (Douglass House Saloon), you'll find that they keep their eggs out, and they're great also.

Yeah, if nothing else, we could meet up for a beer and a pickled egg, else we could draw from the taps at my house if you're interested.

I know what you mean by the, uh, after-smell of pickled eggs. They get a bad rap from the fumes of partially digested remains, but they're an awesome bar snack!

You're welcome at anytime. August is also a good time, with few bugs and warm weather.

I AM in the middle of the Ottawa National forest. In fact, I'm married to the (former) Supervisory Wildlife Biologist of that forest. He retired in January, and we're having a great time. Because he knows the forest so well, we know of all the great waterfalls and hiking trails and more. We're in the middle of a long-term drought, so the water levels are down for canoeing but it's still beautiful. We can give any visitors the insiders' travel tips to this area, and some great spots to fish, picnic or hike.

We love having guests, even just for a quick beer so you can always feel free to stop in and we can make sure you're set up ok!

We have extra bedrooms at our house in town, and a comfortable place at the lake so we can always make room.
