I've recently been playing with chat gpt, so this afternoon we were talking about cider recipes. After a bit of back and forth it came up with this, I'd be interested to hear your thoughts on what it came up with seeing as my first attempt is well under way and I'm already researching a different recipe for batch number 2

🍏🍇 Turbo Cider with Ribena – Recipe Card

Ingredients (for ~7.75 L batch)

  • 7 L Apple Juice (100% pure, carton is fine)
  • 750 ml Ribena (full sugar cordial)
  • 1 Sachet Cider or Wine Yeast
  • (Optional) 250 g sugar → boosts ABV by ~+1.8%
  • Sanitiser (very important!)

Equipment

  • 1 × 1-gallon demijohn or 10 L fermenter with airlock
  • Siphon tube
  • Hydrometer (optional, for ABV check)
  • Bottles & caps (or swing-tops)

Method

  1. Sanitise everything.
  2. Add 7 L apple juice + 750 ml Ribena to fermenter.
  3. (Optional) Dissolve sugar in warm juice, add in.
  4. Stir well. Take OG reading (≈ 1.049–1.050).
  5. Pitch yeast, fit airlock.

Fermentation Timeline

  • Day 1–3: Vigorous bubbling, foamy head.
  • Day 4–7: Slower bubbling, cider clears from the top.
  • Day 8–10: Fermentation finishing. Hydrometer should read ~0.998.
  • Day 11–14: Rack off sediment. Bottle.

Bottling Options

  • Still: Bottle as is.
  • Fizzy: Add ½ tsp sugar per 500 ml bottle, cap, leave 1–2 weeks warm.
  • Sweet:
    • Add Ribena/apple juice in the glass (easiest & safest), OR
    • Stabilise with Campden + sorbate, then sweeten & bottle.

Final Stats

  • OG: ~1.049
  • FG: ~0.998
  • ABV: ~6.7% (≈8.5% if 250 g sugar added)

  • You wont fit 7.5L of liquid into a 1 gallon carboy
  • OG will very likely be above 1.050. I'd bet money on it.
  • 1/2 tsp of sugar per bottle may or my not be the correct amount. The consequences for it being incorrect can very easily injure you. Verify this ratio elsewhere and understand what it is you're accomplishing with this step.

Base concept isn't bad by itself - If it were me I'd probably start by using the soda as a back-sweetening agent and seeing how that goes before trying a batch with it in primary. Best way to do that is ferment a batch and then use it bench test different ratios of soda. Or you could just dump a whole bottle in a see what happens - nothing wrong with doing that, you just might get a profile that's different than what you want.

Regardless of what you end up doing it's important you understand that ChatGPT is setting you up for failure if you follow this to the letter. My advise if to use AI as an adviser but to NEVER base your ingredient ratios off it and ALWAYS verify with your own math and measurements.
