Hello everyone first time post!

I've recently started my second or third dj of wine and I have some have me down equipment and obviously can get much new stuff at the moment. Anyway to keep a long story short, I started my primary fermentation in a carboy and should have not put the full amount of water in it to start, but in my inexperience, I did. Needless to say it bubbled over, I was expecting it though and was about to set up a hose to another container to throw out.

However as you can see on the picture, right at the top of carboy under the neck, the solid-ish purple color stuff is what I'm curious about. I don't know what it is, probably yeast, grape juice and stuff, but should I be worried about it does it need to be cleaned?

Thanks!

This happened to me as well. I think it's just dried in foam that would otherwise have been around the wider rim if the liquid level was lower. I was watching mine before it was topped up and there was a fizz around the rim from the rising gas. I assumed this was how you knew fermentation was still active.

Okay thanks a lot Dr_Jeff

Yeah I was just curious if stirring it in would be advantageous, however probably to difficult to do in a carboy.. Definitely won't make that rookie mistake again!

That is normal, even when it doesn’t foam over you’ll still get that line build up. Swirling it gently to degas it and stir up the yeast is a good thing. Just pick up the carboy or slide it around gently on a table in a circular motion to get it stirring but not shaking it.

As you get first and second racking completed the juice begins to mature and the wine will settle down patience is the key .I wait 11months to bottle most of mine sometimes 1 year and 1/2 for good reds

Thanks for the advice guys! I'll definitely give it a swish then and not a shake!

Fortunately it's just a Costco wine kit so it's more for just a cheap table wine, so the most age it gets is until I've drank the last bottle . I guess it could be good to age even a few just to experiment. When the pandemic is over I'll be able to experiment with more quality, but I just had the kit around so it was time to make it.
