So I'm about to finish the boil on a barleywine. I just rinsed my beautiful new carboy that I bought so I can use a blow-off hose, and accidentally used water that was too hot. There are now cracks in the bottom that do not go all the way through. I am leak testing it right now, and if nothing leaks can I still use it? Or should I just cut a hole in one of my bucket lids to fit the hose and use that? Halp!

I would be leery of using a carboy with cracks no matter how small. Could lead to a big crack which could lead to a broken carboy which could lead to serious injury. If it doesn't break it could harbor bacteria in the cracks which could contaminate future batches. If it were me I would get a new one an us that one to collect change in. Just my opinion though.

are you sure the hot water did it and its not a crackle bottom carboy?

Oh, it's leaking. Plastic bucket it is. I'm glad I tried with water first.
