carbing in growlers

how long to wait? and in general, to what degree does a larger vessel mean a longer carb period?

The carb period is actually about the same. I do half of every batch into 1/2gal growlers. really really cheap in my area. the only thing that you have to watch for is that you crank that top on real good...like super tight. I have walked into my basement to hear screaming...first it was the bottle cap screaming, then it was me. lost carbonation on 2 growlers in that batch. make sure the cap is good. and be carefull when twisting it on, the glass at the top of a growler is quite thin.

Been getting growlers filled at the local liquor barn and they wrap tape around the cap. Would this help?

I believe that's done so it's not technically an "open container".
