I have a beer I just pitched last night and I woke up this morning to hissing coming out the sides of the bucket and the lid is noticeably bulging. I put it out side to try and cool the temps down (it must be over 70), and so if the airlock blows out I don't get beer all over my house. Not really sure what to do, I don't want the beer to explode all over the house and I don't want to chill the yeast and stall the process? Any suggestions.

I assume you have an actual airlock? That's where all the excess co2 should go. Now it is possible for that airlock to become clogged with krausen then the bucket could blow off.

If you are seeing / hearing gas coming out from around the lid, I would take the airlock out and unclog it.

Rig a blow off tube to the airlock. If its a 3 piece style airlock, take off the cap and take out the clicker/tube cover piece and attach a piece of tubing over the center and then run the other end of the tubing into a bucket of water or sanitizer. I've had buckets blow the airlock out before and I would be if it got vigorous enough, it could blow the whole lid.

I had the same issue, i just used my siphoning tube as a blow off and stuck it in a a half gallon jug of sterile water

I've had the lid blow off once and a clogged airlock a few times. All the beers were fine after I rigged up some tubing into a bucket of Star San.

+1 Easy and cheap, fits perfectly in a bucket airlock grommet.

You dont want to chill the yeast? If its in the first few days and you know its outside of the yeast fermentation ramge you should try to cool it down under 70° don't worry about sralling the yeast. If its past 4ish days the off flavors are already done.

nice, thanks for the info, now i just have to work on temp control for this beer.

Definitely! Rig a swamp cooler asap and get the temperature of the wort to the low to mid sixties. I find it best to keep to the cool end of the yeasts optimum temperature range.

lids can definitely blow off. i've mopped the ceiling more than once- just pull out the clogged air lock and let it push foam out of the grommet- like revvy said- nothing bad getting in through that mess. Once it slows, put the blowoff tube in

My lid blew off last night.

I was at my parents house for the weekend. Mom was unimpressed...

Thanks to this brew, I use a blowoff tube for the first day or two (maybe even three) after pitching.
