I just had my first taste of this beer last night. I went to BevMo to pick up a few brews to toast the passing of my cat yesterday. I thought it was an amazing beer!! Needless to say, I've read pretty much every post I could find about Orfy's clone and I'm ready to brew a partial mash rendition of it in a week or so. Anyway, the questions I have are actually very basic:

1) If I can't get Marris Otter can I use any 2-row?

2) What's with the 60min steep after flameout? Just curious.

3) What is the best conditioning time for this? I need a great tasting beer for a party the first weekend in Feb. If I brew in Dec. would it be at it's best or should I wait?

If you do then I think I'd add some biscuit malt or something

After the 60 minute boil you turn out the flame then steep the aroma hops whilst cooling

You should be fine with that. It's a good 10 weeks away.

I was looking at making a batch of this beer myself, but I've been hard-pressed to find Styrian Goldings anywhere. Anyone have any luck finding these at all. Midwest basically said they'll be difficult to find in 2008. :(

I used a pinch of cara-vienna and biscuit to make up for not having marris otter when I brewed it. Here's my version.

Prettttty close to Orfy's, I was trying my best to copy his with what ingredients I had:

I needed an ounce of Styrian Goldings and substituted .25oz Saaz + .75oz EKG for it with no problem...

Styrian Goldings are the decendents of the fuggle. So for the bittering was use enough fuggles to get your IBU's wanted. I've become a big fan of this hop. For the flavor addition I would just use the same amount of fuggles as SG's.

I've been very fortunate that my LHBS has yet to be affected by the hops shortage. Had no problem getting the Styrian Goldings.

Can some one post it please.
Their old one was dated and didn't match the breweries ingredients.

Looks slightly different:

BYO Hobgoblin Dark Ale Clone
Dec 07 pg 35

OG - 1.048
FG - 1.014
IBU - 25
SRM - 24
ABV - 4.3

7.75 lb (3.5 kg) Marris Otter
2 lb (0.91) English Crystal 75
0.25 lb (0.11 kg) English Chocolate Malt

.75 oz (21 g) Fuggle FWH
.75 oz (21 g) Styrian Golding 30 minutes
.25 oz (7.1 g) Styrian Golding 10 minutes

Wyeast 1187 (Ringwood)

It looks plausible. It's a lot of crystal though. I normaly try not to go over 10%

It would be good to do a side by side brew.
I have one conditioning now I find time I may try the BYO version.

Not sure if you know this, but their recipes are based off of like 65% eff. Keep that in mind.

Cool, I may have to shoot for an "all-Fuggles" version then. Getting Saaz isn't easy right now for me either.

Damn you hops shortage!

Based on my tasting, I'd say the the BYO mash temp is low.

I'd be tempted to get this around 156-159 range for that malty profile.

That's it, I'm heading out of the office and going to rack my virgin voyage hobGloblin to the secondary.

I was thinking similarly. I really enjoyed the maltiness of this beer, and I was thinking that as a partial mash, I would not be getting enough non-fermentables to retain that maltiness unless I mashed hot.

my best attempts have been with the mash temps between 156 and 158.
i think i am on my 6th clone attempt:drunk:
