I've read here its not good practice to order liquid yeast online in the summer heat.Even Northern Brewer has a disclaimer right now saying not to buy liquid yeast,or buy at your own risk.So my question is how are the LHBS getting it to there shops safely? I realize there running a business and need to stock yeast and make money but is it possible there selling the same, possible half dead yeast that I'm being told not to buy? Even buying in bulk with a bigger box and more ice packs isn't going to last long in 95 deg heat

i would imagine they use a refrigerated shipping truck, much like one for shipping milk.
Or for small shipments perhaps their yeast is delivered by a company which utilizes igloo coolers for yeast transportation.

Probably the same way refrigerated stuff gets to the grocery store ...

Dry and liquid brewing yeast both have their advantages and disadvantages. Selecting yeast depends on your brewing plans and needs. It used to be that dry yeast was inferior to liquid yeast, and some older brewing books still report this information. This is absolutely not the case anymore. Dry yeast is sterile, strain-pure, and highly capable of producing great beer. Because it is dried, the shelf life is often a year or more and it is much more tolerant of warm storage or shipping conditions than liquid yeast. http://www.northernbrewer.com/connect/2011/08/dry-yeast-vs-liquid-yeast/

I buy liquid yeast all the time online. Find an online store that's pretty close to where you live so it arrives quickly. I buy from Morebeer because it ships from PA and I usually get it next day no matter what shipping option I choose.

I would have never thought of a refrigerated truck. Seems odd though.Hard to believe WL is driving all over the country in refrigerated trucks or piggybacking it on a food truck between the broccoli and cauliflower. Still possible I guess

I use dry yeast and understand it works just fine but in this case I was looking for a wyeast 1084 sub in dry and there doesn't seem to be one.

I wouldnt give it a second thought unless your LHBS has a reputation for leaving stale stuff on the shelves

I just received some yeast from Finland and it took 2 weeks to arrive, during all of which, it was 90-100 degrees here in KY. Just make a starter, mine took a bit to get rolling (it was also a tiny tiny 3ml vial) but it still was ok in the end

Probably the same way Blue Apron delivers fresh food to your door. Refrigerator packs. I get Blue Apron delivered every Sunday and that food is ice cold and the packs are still mostly frozen.

Don't worry about it. Make a starter and you'll be fine. I've ordered plenty of liquid yeasts that took 4-5 days to get to my house, and have never had an issue.

Glad you mentioned that. I was about to ask how long it was taking y'all to get that hybrid from Finland. I don't stay at my house every night during the week so I've been going by a good bit after work to see if it came so it's not sitting in 100+ degree heat with 400% humidity all day. He shipped on Monday so I figured it would be at least a week.

From the website:

Question:
How does White Labs ship its yeast?

Answer:
For commercial customers and stores, White Labs offers FedEx shipping to most locations and FedEx International Priority outside of the 50 states. We also offer alternative shipping methods upon request or when orders are placed on Yeastman.com; such as OnTrac (select Western states only), UPS and DHL (international only).

Boxes are insulated and filled with dry ice for ideal transit and delivery temperatures. Please place in refrigerated conditions immediately upon arrival.

Domestic store orders are shipped Wednesday for Friday delivery with alternative ship days available upon request or when orders are placed on Yeastman.com. Brewery yeast is shipped overnight domestically, usually on Tuesdays.
