Brewed a fairly big beer but in a 1 gallon batch. I used a blow off because I'm starting to see the ultimate benefits. Last night around 12:30 am it was fine but there was some krausen that was in my jug of sanitizer from the blow off tube. That would be about 18 hours after pitching.
This morning I came down and checked it out to find that the $20 investment into a cooler with a lid was wonderful because the bung shot out and krausen was everywhere. I dunked the bung and tube into star san and cleaned off the lid.
I thought a blow off tube would be okay. It's a 1/4" tube and there was limited headspace because I accidentally racked onto about 8 oz of star san. Things were a mess on brew day as you can see.
Just wondered if head space (or lack thereof) is pretty much to blame or if I should start considering covering my 5 gallon batches too because things get weird over night.
It is a porter, maybe it is pissed that stout got all my attention last night.
