Brewed a fairly big beer but in a 1 gallon batch. I used a blow off because I'm starting to see the ultimate benefits. Last night around 12:30 am it was fine but there was some krausen that was in my jug of sanitizer from the blow off tube. That would be about 18 hours after pitching.

This morning I came down and checked it out to find that the $20 investment into a cooler with a lid was wonderful because the bung shot out and krausen was everywhere. I dunked the bung and tube into star san and cleaned off the lid.

I thought a blow off tube would be okay. It's a 1/4" tube and there was limited headspace because I accidentally racked onto about 8 oz of star san. Things were a mess on brew day as you can see. :)

Just wondered if head space (or lack thereof) is pretty much to blame or if I should start considering covering my 5 gallon batches too because things get weird over night.

It is a porter, maybe it is pissed that stout got all my attention last night.

A lil more head space is always a good thing to a point. Maybe try using a 3/8" blow off hose? I never go smaller than that on my 5-6 gallon batches.

That is a good point. These guys at the LHBS that I used to go to a lot sold me on this bung+SS coupler thing & thinner tubing. This being a 1 gallon jug I thought I would be okay. But racking into star san wasn't helping matters. You're in the drinking thread and likely read about my mayhem. :)

As long as it's a headspace issue mostly. Usually I have plenty of room in my 5 gallon batches. These 1 gallon batches were just for kicks but this guy is turning into a PITA! haha

Even with a full sized blowoff tube and a 6 gallon carboy with 5 gallons in it, the amount of krausen and yeast coming over can be a bit excessive. The big belgian I did recently with Wyeast 3787 was insane. Had I used boiled and cooled water in a sanitized blowoff container, I literally could have pitched it into another batch. And using a gallon jug for a container, starting 1/2 full leaves you room for that kind of blow over.

Also, shorten up that full sized blowoff tube as much as possible.

I use 1/2 gallon plastic vodka bottles for blow offs with a 3/8" tube no longer than it needs to be. The jug is 1/3 full of water with a splash of Starsan. holds the krausen blow off pretty good.
