Hi all. I tried to brew a racer 5 clone on 6/15/13 . with some wlp-051 .Boy did i screw up Ithink i pitched a little warm .and my starter wasn't a 24 hr full blown starter. I under pitched .took 20 hrs to start. The question is should i waste my time and filter this hubba baba brew to try to clean up . Or is it a lost cause.

Don't filter it! At this point any oxygen added to the beer will oxidize it and add the flavor of wet cardboard to the bubble gum. I believe that particular off flavor is usually caused by too high ferm temps, as you said. How hot was it during primary? It might get better over time. Google "swamp cooler" for your next batch.

Thanks for the reply. the frem temps were pretty warm, dead of summer. mid to high 70's. since then got me me a used kegerator as a temp control frig. The beer is keged, and in the frig for a while. allready carbed. You think if everything was purged with co2, and filter purged with water and starsan. it would still get oxidized.

Maybe not. It's just a good idea in general though to not agitate the beer once fermentation is complete. If the room was in the mid to high 70's then the fermenting beer could have been over 80! Which could certainly lead to off flavors. Give it time, you never know.

I don't think you are going to be able to filter that out, it's a chemical (ester) byproduct of your yeast fermenting too warm. WLP051 will get fruity above 72F.
