definitely in for the Kangaroo, sounds awesome. Befuddlement is aptly named, could see me grabbing an extra or two but don't think i need to max out, sounds weird. Smokey sounds like they ruined melange 3, probably skip on that one.

I actually think Smokey sounds good (coming from a guy who doesn't like smoked beers). I think the BT and Bois as well as the vanilla and cocoa nibs could muddle down the smoke a bit to where it is just a pleasant peat flavor instead of intensely smokey. I'm in for a max allocation.

It could wind up tasting like a marshmallow -- or it could taste like hell.

Apparently now The Bruery isn't even waiting until one year later to start using overstock of that year's anniversary ale in blends.

Befuddlement is the only one I'd want and can't buy it. Thanks Bruery for making it easy again to not spend money with you.

Some of these new allocations sound like they are trying to put lipstick on a pig so they can get rid of their excess inventory. As long as it's not sour, we'll just blend it with Black Tuesday and people will buy it all up

One born every minute. I'm guilty of this.

Blame it on Rare Beer Club, they picked it.

But I have a feeling that they are nearing the end of the Smoking Wood blends. It's apparently a bitch to make the beer.
It also tastes like **** and probably sells badly (ie, having to blend it accidentally into everything to get rid of it. I hope they replace it with another BT variant yay! Or they could make BW XII all the time.

It was similar to Melange #3 but the smoke cut the sweetness. Smoke wasn't dominant in the nose or taste. As it warmed the chocolate and vanilla beans came out and dominated the flavor profile. I would put it above M3 and BT but below all the other variants.
This is what I was hoping for. Thanks for the review.

also pls review befuddlement

Kangarue sounds pretty good to me. Any NYC reserve society members not planning on maxing out who could snag one for me?

also pls review befuddlement

Befuddlement was not a favorite on first sip. In fact initially I was a much bigger fan of the SitR w/ boysenberries, but as they warmed the complexities of Befuddlement came through. Where the SitR w/ boysenberries was light and crisp and fruit forward it was also acidic and while I really enjoyed it in a flight anymore of it would have been too much. Befuddlement was the oposite. As it warmed the flavors of the blends pulled together. It was more jammy than fresh fruit like. The sweetness and body of the anniversary cut the acidity and gave it a fuller mouth feel and it was heavy on the boysenberries. At the end of the taster I wanted more. I got a full pour after my flight and felt the same... wanting more.

I had the exact same reactions as you.

i'm picturing an overwhelming bourbon and oak kick to a sour that sounds kind of gross (like bourbonic plague) -- you're painting a picture of a sweeter version of BRL which sounds awesome....

I have respectfully disagree on this one. I'd put it behind M3 and BT...way, way behind. Different strokes, and all, but I wasn't a fan of smokey and the Bois. Not terrible by any means, but definitely not great. Only my opinion of course.

Contemplating a reserve membership for 2015. Should I expect it to be easy to get in? Or are open seats hard to come by with the craft beer 'splosion and what not? Worth signing up for Preservation to increase my odds?

If I do end up joining, look for an "ISO: Bruery Trustee" post from me ;)

It's pretty easy to get in if you just act quickly.

this has been true in years past and i think it's likely to be true this year. did RS memberships even sell out this year?

in any case, i won't reup. not necessarily because the non-infected beer hasn't been worth it, but out of a desire to spend less money (albeit if they shipped directly to il, i would consider splitting a membership with a few locals). you'll probably get far more cancellations this year due to the massive infection issues.
