I'm visiting the states for the holidays. I found a big tub of "brewers yeast" in the vitamin and suppliment section of the grocery store. Pics for detail.

A few questions/observation:
1) will it beer?
2) if it does beer, it would be a cheap way to get your hands on a lot of yeast. This one pound tub was about $11.
2) if brewers yeast is a healthy suppliment, I must be in really good shape, right?
3) looks to be an ale yeast so I wonder how versatile it is?
4) anyone tried this?

Dried yeast we buy for brewing has gone through a process to ensure a highly viable product. I rather doubt yeast created for consumption has the same viability....

Cheers!

It's probably dead yeast. Even if it could be used for beer fermentation, you don't know the characteristics, the fermentation temperature. I don't think it's worth taking the risk with it, but rather using some of the cheap dry brewer's yeast and then harvest it for up to five generations and reusing it.

Živjeli!
