I brewed a Brewers Best Munich helles kit about 2 weeks ago. I saw no indication of fermentation. This is my first lager style so I am not sure if i may be different. There is no airlock activity, no krausen or foam forming at the top of the fermenter. I moved it into a secondary fermenter to check for yeast deposit on the bottom, this is what I found.

Looks kind of normal to me but the green color makes me wonder if it is just the hops that settled to the bottom. Does this look like yeast to you guys, or should I pitch another pack.

The only mishap in the brewing process was rehydrating the yeast. The yeast packet said to add it to lukewarm water, for 10 minutes before pitching. We got a little antsy and added it to the water about half an hour before the wort was cool enough, so the yeast was in the water for about 30 minutes. Could this cause any problems.

I regularly rehydrate for 30 minutes or more and haven't had a problem. Based on something I read here yesterday apparently if yeast rehydrates for more than 15 minutes or something then some of the cell walls start breaking and you lose viability. But I can't imagine 30 minutes would be enough to lose all your viability.

What's the hydrometer say?

:( Unfortunately we broke the hydrometer before we got to test. I ordered a new one from midwest supplies but have not gotten it yet.

Too bad, that's the only real way to tell if fermentation happened. You could try tasting a little sample, see if it's a typical sugary wort taste or more like a young beer. Not seeing any krausen isn't the best sign. Are your ferm temps in range for the yeast? Im not sure about pitching more after two weeks either if nothing has happened yet, you might want to look into what possible effects come from this.

I should have a new hydrometer in a few days, I guess I'll wait till then and see what we have.

The temps are within the appropriate range. Ill post what I find out then.

Thanks for the support.

You should also be able to smell and taste it and tell if there is alcohol and if it tastes like wort or more like beer.
