Going to visit this summer. My sister lives in Port Jefferson and I see there are two breweries in town. Any other place REALLY worth visiting? Saw a post that there are like 40 craft breweries on the island out side of the city.

My favorites are Greenport, Long Ireland, Oyster Bay, Great South Bay and Crooked Ladder.
None are very close to Port Jeff, but no more than 45 minutes away. Port Jeff Brewery is quite good, and there are some great NY beers to try in bottle shops and bars.
Have fun!

My favorite is Sand City in Northport. Also, a 2nd Brewery just opened in Northport called Harbor Head.

Lincoln ave Holbrook, not far from Port Jeff you can visit 3 right in the same area. 1940- good brews pleasant tasting room, St James for really good Belgian styles, and Spider Bite for Boris their Imperial Stout. Come all the way south to Patchogue for Brickhouse (brewpub) and a beer bar called Hoptron everything is craft and many are local.

I forgot to mention Bluepoint, also in Patchogue. Yes they were purchased by AB, however they are producing some nice offerings for the tasting room that are not available commercially and they support the local homebrewer ( they hosted big brew day last May and handed out $1000 in gift certificates to a LHBS). They also kept their staff on through the expansion.

If you count Queens as "Long Island", there's Finback which is outstanding. If you want to go to Brooklyn, there's Threes which I've been told is fantastic as well. Last weekend we went out east to Riverhead and tried Long Ireland, Greensport, and Moustache. All were good - but if I was to pick one I'd say Moustache had the best atmosphere of the three. Greensport as well, at their Peconic location. Choices!

Probably won't go into "the city". Oops being born in N.Y. I should know that "the city" means Manhattan. But I've been gone over 50 years. LOL Mahalo for the ideas.

There's the Brick House Brewery in Patchogue, and right across the street is the Hoptron Brewtique. Hoptron is not a brewery, but it's a nice place to go if you want to enjoy a wide variety of craft beer. On the wall of Hoptron is a map of all the Long Island Breweries, and the people there are very knowledgeable of them. They could probably give you great advice on what Long Island breweries to visit, and when are the best times to go.

Bluepoint was cool pre AB. I haven't been there since the buy out though. \

Regarding Captain Lawrence. Obviously not in Long Island, but yeah, that is a killer brewery. They have some stellar brews!

There's a local homebrew shop in Baldwin (Homebrews and Handgrenades) which had this map on their wall of breweries on the island. It's how we found the ones in Riverhead - hopefully it helps someone else as well.

I live in Port Jefferson too. Enjoy the brewery in the village as it is dog walking distance for me. Long Island is pretty big and your ability to explore breweries may depend on your traveling companions enthusiasm for the adventure. Sand City is a great call and about an hour from PJ. Greenpoint is also good if you go to the North part of Eastern Long Island. Might encourage others to go out there for the wineries and just happen to end up at a brewery. If you can get to Brooklyn I strongly recommend Other Half.

Another option from Port Jefferson is to take the ferry to Connecticut. You will need to drive on but from other side you have Two Roads near by. OEC and NEBCo are not far from Bridgeport and fun to visit too. But what the heck if you make it to Bridgeport in a car you are then 90 minutes from Treehouse...

I'm only a few years on Long Island but seems that if you are in Suffolk County (and Port Jeff is well into Suffolk County) then Brooklyn and Queens are part of The City. I still say they are on the island but I guess not in Long Island.
