Hey everyone, i'm 21 years old and just starting a life on my own with a real job. Brewing has always interested me so finally now that i'm on my own I can try it out. I went to a local supply store and bought a kit (true brew) Comes with what I need. And then bought http://www.highgravitybrew.com/productcart/pc/Brewer-s-Best-Weizenbier-215p848.htm - that kit. I'm really hoping I did everything right and that nothing was contaminated...It seems like that is a major issue when brewing. I sanitized everything, but a little water got into my wort while trying to cool it in the sink... im talking a couple drops and then a bit from suckback on the airlock. Am I completely doomed this batch or do I have a chance?

No worries. I had at least a quart of water drop into my brew kettle from the water bath on one of my first beers (it's been a while). The beer turned out great, everyone was thrilled and kept asking for more.

Totally ruined. Better start over.

Kidding! Have a beer, see it through. I had a wort chiller blow a hose, shooting a bunch of water into the wort. Came out fine!

I also just had my agave wit suck about two shots of vodka through the airlock... Ive got high hopes for this one ;-)

I say dont worry about it. See it through, you'll be rewarded in a few weeks. :mug:

Congrats on your first brew. I remember everything going wrong on my first brew, a Brewer's Best Amber Ale, and everyone said it tasted good. Don't worry unless you see strange things growing in your fermentor, and even then a beer can still be salvaged.

Awesome, thanks guys! And thanks for the welcome! Like I said I've been wanting to do this for a while and it felt awesome making the first batch. Lol I put the hops in and told my girlfriend to come smell it because it smelt like beer (as expected) but still it's quite the thrill your first time haha!

I've read more on what to do after the fact that the "mistakes" have been made so I know next time exactly what to do and what to have prepared. I cant wait for this first kit batch, and probably a few more kits after until I can start customizing my brews! One question though, I got a guide to go with the actual ingredients and a homebrew kit being a general guide to brewing. I took pieces from each and I feel like I have too much in the fermenting bucket.... How much water do you have in your fermenting bucket that you add the wort to?

You want to have as much in your bucket, as the recipe called for to be your end volume. Your link shows 5 gallons. Your bucket should have markers on it, how much does it show is in it?

Also you really want to know if you came within reason of your SG/OG. The link for the weizen shows OG: 1.047 - 1.051. Did you get a hydrometer with your brewing kit, and did you measure your gravity before you pitched your yeast? Was it anywhere near these numbers?

Honestly either way I wouldn't worry too much about it. I'm sure it'll come out fine. Clean AND Sanitize really good when you go to bottle. That's your last chance to get any kind of nasties in the brew. Once you get that bottled, it'll be time to start a new batch, and get that pipeline going!

Homebrewing is by far one of the most "rewarding" hobbies you can take up...enjoy! :D

That smell never gets old. :mug:

Congrats bro. I started brewing at 21, too. I've never had an infected batch, and I'm about to hit batch #30. I've had many similar incidents, a very common one being a drop of condensation from my chiller or the fermenter lid hitting my hand and then dropping into the fermenter. Don't worry too much about it. Use a product called star-san to sanitize, put some in a spray bottle and spray it on anything/everything, and buy a pump-dispenser of some hand sanitizer and I think you'll be fine, barring anything crazy.

This is a great hobby and friends, family, and strangers will love you for it. You send me a message if you ever have any questions.
